Chief Estimator

We are seeking an experienced Chief Estimator to lead the preparation, review, and submission of accurate, competitive cost estimates for a diverse range of projects. This role will oversee the estimating function from initial opportunity assessment through tender submission, ensuring that all pricing is commercially sound, technically robust, and aligned with project requirements. You will interpret drawings, specifications, schedules, and other tender documentation; develop detailed labour, material, plant, subcontractor, and overhead calculations; and identify key risks, exclusions, assumptions, and opportunities for value improvement.


The successful candidate will manage and coordinate estimating activities, establish clear pricing strategies, and work closely with internal teams, consultants, suppliers, and subcontractors to obtain reliable quotations and clarify scope. Responsibilities will include reviewing tender invitations, preparing bills of quantities and cost plans, conducting site visits, maintaining estimating databases, analysing historical project data, and presenting estimates and tender recommendations to senior stakeholders. You will also support contract handover by communicating commercial assumptions, pricing details, and identified risks to the delivery team. Strong attention to detail and the ability to meet demanding deadlines are essential.


You will bring significant experience in a senior estimating role within construction, engineering, infrastructure, or a related industry, together with a strong understanding of procurement routes, construction methodologies, contractual requirements, and market conditions. Excellent numerical, analytical, negotiation, and communication skills are required, as is proficiency with estimating software, spreadsheets, and relevant industry systems. The ability to lead and develop estimating staff, manage multiple priorities, and exercise sound commercial judgement will be highly valued. A relevant technical, construction, engineering, or quantity surveying qualification is desirable, although substantial practical experience will also be considered.
