Title: Sr. Server Engineer Req #: 0000249452 Category: Information Technology and Systems / Clinical Informatics Status: Full-Time Shift: Day Facility: RWJBarnabas Health Corporate Services Department: IT&S Service Support Pay Range: $121,749.00 - $171,970.00 per year (New Jersey) Job Summary The Senior Server Engineer is responsible for supporting, maintaining, and improving enterprise server, virtualization, storage, and hybrid cloud infrastructure across assigned datacenters, data rooms, and related computing environments. This role requires advanced technical knowledge of Windows Server, desktop operating systems, VMware, Citrix, converged and hyper‑converged compute platforms, enterprise storage, data protection, and cloud technology platforms including Microsoft Azure, AWS, and related hybrid cloud services. The engineer will support secure, scalable, and resilient infrastructure operations through proactive monitoring, troubleshooting, automation, documentation, patching, upgrades, and lifecycle management. This position also requires strong scripting and automation skills, sound understanding of information security best practices, and the ability to participate in scheduled and unscheduled after‑hours maintenance, emergency response, and mandatory on‑call rotation in a 24×7 computing environment. The Senior Server Engineer collaborates effectively with customers, vendors, application teams, peers, and leadership; mentors other engineers; provides recommendations for operational improvements and innovation; and delivers excellent customer service with professionalism, compassion, empathy, and a consistent supportive attitude. Education Required Certification or equivalent may be substituted for a BA degree. Additional Education Preferred Bachelor or Master Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related field. Equivalent work experience is acceptable. Experience Required Minimum of seven years’ experience in Information Technology and Services in the related area. Experience in the Healthcare field helpful, but not required. Experience Preferred Microsoft Windows Server and Desktop and/or Linux/Unix Operating Systems, VMware vSphere and Horizon, Citrix, Active Directory, general networking concepts, PowerShell, Converged and Hyper‑converged computing platforms, Cloud computing concepts, and data protection platforms such as NetBackup and Cohesity. Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, and GCP). Job Responsibilities Monitor problem ticket queues and resolve tickets in a timely manner according to the defined SLAs. Participate in monthly security patching for the computing environment. Troubleshoot application‑related issues with peers and customers; function as an escalation point for application admins and second‑level support in troubleshooting complex system issues. Troubleshoot infrastructure and related technologies by reviewing logs and error messages. Update operating systems (Windows) and assist with updating VMware infrastructure (upgrades, hotfixes, security remediations). Assist vendors, customers, and peers with remote access needs. Follow and execute defined runbooks and documentation for disaster recovery events, system decommissions, infrastructure installs/upgrades, and application patching. Monitor infrastructure via monitoring toolsets. Create technical documentation and workflows. Follow defined change management policies and procedures. Attend daily, weekly, and monthly team meetings and project or troubleshooting calls to address issues or tasks. Participate in projects as assigned. Support cloud technology platforms, including Microsoft Azure, AWS, and hybrid cloud services, by assisting with provisioning, monitoring, troubleshooting, access coordination, and operational support activities. Perform other duties as assigned or directed by management. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Advanced knowledge of Windows Server, Linux/Unix, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and related enterprise infrastructure services. Strong experience supporting virtualized and hybrid infrastructure platforms, including VMware vSphere, VMware Horizon, Citrix, converged, and hyper‑converged compute environments. Working knowledge of cloud technology platforms, including Microsoft Azure, AWS, hybrid cloud architecture, identity and access management, monitoring, security controls, and cost‑aware operational support. Ability to troubleshoot complex server, cloud, virtualization, storage, application, and network‑related issues using logs, monitoring tools, performance data, and root‑cause analysis methods. Proficiency with scripting and automation tools, such as PowerShell, to improve operational efficiency, reporting, provisioning, patching, and repeatable infrastructure tasks. Knowledge of enterprise storage, backup, recovery, disaster recovery, and data protection concepts to maintain resilient and available computing environments. Strong understanding of infrastructure security best practices, vulnerability remediation, privileged access, patch management, change control, and regulatory or organizational compliance requirements. Ability to create, maintain, and follow technical documentation, diagrams, workflows, standards, operational runbooks, and knowledge articles. Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, manage multiple assignments, support on‑call responsibilities, and make sound decisions in a fast‑paced 24×7 enterprise computing environment. Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with peers, vendors, application teams, customers, and leadership. Ability to mentor engineers and peers, share technical knowledge, support continuous improvement, and contribute to team development.
