Starting Date: Immediately Job Description About Kansas City, Kansas Public Library: Kansas City, Kansas Public Library (KCKPL) serves Wyandotte County, a community in Northeastern Kansas with a population of around 170,000, through five library branches and three mobile libraries. KCKPL was established in 1893 and has been under the authority of the Kansas City, Kansas Public School District Board of Education since 1899. The Library’s mission is to connect members of a dynamic community with information, tools, resources, and welcoming spaces to enrich lives in Wyandotte County. Job Goal The Data Specialist supports the library’s data collection, analysis, and reporting efforts by compiling statistical and demographic information, identifying trends, and developing reports and visualizations. This position ensures accurate and timely reporting while helping turn library data into meaningful information that supports planning, decision-making, and the evaluation of library services and initiatives. Essential Functions Compile, analyze, and distribute weekly, monthly, annual, and as-needed statistical reports from Savannah, the reporting functions of the Integrated Library System (ILS), and other library data sources. Analyze library usage, circulation, programming, digital services, and other operational data to identify trends, patterns, changes, and opportunities. Track and analyze library usage and programming trends in relation to demographic and geographic trends in Wyandotte County. Develop reports, data visualizations, and other tools that clearly communicate findings to library administration, staff, and other stakeholders to support library planning and decision-making. Identify key performance indicators and measures for evaluating library services, programs, marketing efforts, and organizational initiatives. Work with the Marketing and Communications Department to analyze audience behavior, campaign performance, communication effectiveness, and community reach. Provide data analysis and recommendations to support ongoing and future library initiatives, including identifying opportunities for service improvements, audience growth, and more effective allocation of resources. Assist with the completion of required library reports and surveys for outside agencies and professional organizations, including the Kansas State Library, Public Library Association (PLA), American Library Association (ALA), and other organizations. Work with KCKPL Administration and library staff to fulfill statistical requests and support special projects. Present data findings and recommendations in clear, understandable formats appropriate for both technical and non-technical audiences. Attend library-related meetings, workshops, in-service programs, and other professional development opportunities. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in data analytics, statistics, business, or a related field, or equivalent mix of education and experience. Experience with data collection, analysis, reporting, or related work. Strong proficiency with spreadsheets, databases, and data analysis and reporting tools. Ability to analyze quantitative and qualitative data to identify trends, patterns, and meaningful insights. Experience developing reports, data visualizations, dashboards, or other tools to clearly communicate findings. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present data and findings to both technical and non-technical audiences. Experience working in a library, nonprofit, government, educational, or other public-service organization preferred. Ability to provide own transportation to and from library locations or other metropolitan-area systems. Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and extra duty as needed. Must support and uphold the mission, procedures, and policies of KCKPL. Must pass a background check according to library standards. Physical Demands Must be able to stand, kneel, walk, reach, stoop, and lift up to 35 pounds as work activities, programming, setup, and daily responsibilities require. Work may occur in environments containing dust and mildew and with varying lighting and noise levels. Work Environment Primarily an office and library work environment involving data collection, analysis, reporting, and collaboration with staff across departments and locations.
