Assistant Project Manager (Mechanical Construction)

Position Overview
The Assistant Project Manager supports project delivery for commercial, industrial and airport mechanical projects, assisting the Project Manager to ensure work is completed safely, on schedule, on budget and to quality standards. This role coordinates mechanical trades (HVAC, sheet metal, piping, plumbing), manages subcontracts and onsite activities, oversees MEP installation and commissioning, and acts as a primary point of contact between field teams, design engineers and clients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Project Manager in planning, scheduling and executing mechanical construction projects from mobilization through closeout.
  • Coordinate and supervise mechanical trades onsite (HVAC, sheet metal, piping, plumbing) to ensure work sequencing, quality and productivity.
  • Review and manage shop drawings, submittals, RFIs and ASIs; coordinate with design engineers and consultants to resolve technical issues promptly.
  • Support procurement and materials management to ensure timely delivery and proper tracking of equipment and components.
  • Monitor project cost performance, track labor and material costs, assist with budget updates and prepare change order documentation.
  • Maintain project schedules (baseline and look-ahead), identify critical path activities and recommend mitigation measures to keep projects on track.
  • Enforce site safety, quality assurance and regulatory compliance; lead toolbox talks and ensure subcontractor adherence to company safety policies.
  • Participate in client and subcontractor meetings, prepare progress reports, and communicate project status to stakeholders.
  • Support commissioning, testing and turnover activities, including coordination of MEP system start-up and punch list resolution.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation (daily logs, subcontracts, O&M manuals, closeout documents) and assist with lessons-learned and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related technical discipline; or equivalent trade background with strong supervisory experience.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in mechanical construction or MEP contracting; experience on commercial, industrial or airport projects strongly preferred.
  • Practical knowledge of HVAC systems, sheet metal fabrication, piping, plumbing systems and MEP coordination.
  • Familiarity with project management tools and scheduling software (MS Project, Primavera or equivalent) and proficiency with AutoCAD/Revit or BIM workflows.
  • Experience reviewing shop drawings, preparing RFIs, submittals and managing change orders and closeout documentation.
  • Strong understanding of construction safety standards and regulations (OSHA/CSA), quality control processes, and commissioning procedures.
  • Proven communication and leadership skills with the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and maintain client relationships.
  • Solid problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Valid drivers license and willingness to work onsite, including periods of extended hours to meet project demands.
  • Certifications such as PMP, CCM, LEED, or trade certifications are a plus.
