Position Overview Part‑Time Police Officer – Savannah Police Department. This role allows experienced law‑enforcement professionals to continue serving their community while maintaining a flexible schedule. Maintain visibility by patrolling assigned areas, streets, parks, neighborhoods, and businesses; observe and report on suspicious activity. Perform surveillance of locations and suspects; collect and review data; develop trends and patterns; file intelligence reports. Obtain warrants; conduct search operations; locate missing persons. Determine probable cause for searches and reasonable suspicion for detentions; pursue, arrest, or subdue suspects; process and transport prisoners. Respond to emergency calls and assistance requests; assist or back fellow officers; execute warrants; perform traffic stops; mediate disputes; advise suspects of rights. Respond to accident calls; gather information, investigate, and reconstruct serious injury or fatal accidents; interview victims and witnesses; investigate hit-and-run incidents; notify relatives as necessary. Establish roadblocks; enforce traffic violations; issue citations and warnings; administer field sobriety tests; identify wanted persons and vehicles; impound vehicles; assist stranded motorists; keep roadways clear of hazards. Identify illegal drugs and hazardous materials. Enter or retrieve data from computer systems, including stolen property, arrest and wanted person information, investigation data, and criminal/driving records; review crime statistics. Assist with interdepartmental duties and city activities, such as school zone work, traffic direction, animal control, event security, special escorts, crowd/riot control, or other assignments. Document case information; assist in prosecuting offenders; testify in court. Respond to queries, complaints, and requests for information from merchants, community organizations, public, employees, superiors, and others; attend community meetings and assist in prevention programs. Contact command/supervisory personnel for emergency response and critical incident communications; exchange information with dispatchers, attorneys, court personnel, medical examiners, and other agencies. Attend shift meetings, seminars, and training sessions to maintain knowledge of operations, policies, and procedures. Prepare and complete forms, logs, requests, records, and reports; maintain administrative records and files. Cooperate with federal, state, and local law‑enforcement agencies and representatives. Perform other related duties as assigned. Perform shift work. Qualifications and Requirements Valid driver's license and high school diploma or GED. 21 years of age by date of hire; U.S. citizen, repatriated, or naturalized citizen. Minimum of 3 years law‑enforcement experience. Georgia POST certification or ability to complete the Equivalency of Training (EOT) through Georgia POST. Extensive background investigation and post‑offer/pre‑employment medical exam, including supervised drug screen. Knowledge of law‑enforcement procedures, federal, state, and local laws, department and city policies, city boundaries, and geography. Skills in interpersonal relations, computer operation, emergency vehicle operation, criminal investigations, crime‑pattern detection, preparation of legal documents, radio/communications equipment, firearms and restraint equipment, planning, organization, decision making, public speaking, and public relations. Driver's license history must not contain: DUI/DWI charge with disposition of Nolo Contendre, conviction, or plea within past 5 years, or no more than one such charge within past 7 years. Suspensions in past 3 years (except one insurance cancellation) and no more than one suspension within past 7 years. Three or more moving violations in past 2 years and no more than six in past 7 years. Vehicular homicide, hit and run, fleeing or attempting to elude the police charges/arrests. Criminal history must not contain: Pending criminal cases. Convictions, Nolo Contendre, or pleas involving sexual offenses, domestic violence, impersonation of a police officer, perjury or false statements (including first‑offender pleas). Felony convictions or Nolo Contendre or pleas involving felony arrests (including first‑offender pleas). Serious misdemeanor convictions, Nolo Contendre, or pleas. Disqualifying conditions: Untruthfulness or omission of information during application process. Any discharge from armed forces other than an honorable discharge. Membership or association with hate or terrorist groups. Unsatisfactory work history or background investigation findings within past three years. Possession or sale of a controlled substance; marijuana use within past year, except experimental uses reviewed case‑by‑case. Compliance with a No Use of Tobacco Agreement. Participation in random drug testing; failure to provide a urine sample or a positive test results in termination. Maintenance of motor‑vehicle record (MVR) meeting city eligibility requirements; failure results in termination. Reporting of any DUI arrest or citation within 24 hours; conviction may lead to termination. Participation in the City‑authorized Employee Assistance Program is required; refusal may result in termination. Selection Process Physical Agility Test (PAT) consisting of nine tasks over 870 feet (approx. half‑court basketball court). Time limit: 2 minutes 6 seconds. Penalties include added seconds for knocked hurdles, foot faults, or skipping stairs, and multiple attempts for certain tasks. Background investigation, supervised drug screen, and medical screen prior to employment. Verification of education, certifications, and licenses.
