Van Driver

Position: Van Driver Location: Godwin Heights Transportation Department, Wyoming, MI Reports To: Transportation Supervisor Godwin Heights Public Schools (GHPS) is an urban K-12 public school district in Wyoming, Michigan. The Van Driver is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of students to and from school using a passenger van. This position ensures the safety, well-being, and supervision of all passengers while maintaining compliance with traffic laws, district policies, and safety regulations. Key Responsibilities Transport students to and from school, following assigned routes and schedules. Ensure the safety of all passengers by enforcing district safety rules and proper use of seat belts. Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the van to ensure it is in safe operating condition. Report any vehicle maintenance or safety concerns promptly. Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel usage, and student attendance as required. Assist students in boarding and exiting the van as needed, ensuring safe procedures at all times. Communicate effectively and respectfully with students, parents, and school staff. Follow all federal, state, and local traffic laws and district transportation policies. Respond calmly and appropriately to emergencies or unexpected situations. Qualifications Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Prior experience working with children or in a transportation role is preferred. Ability to pass required background checks and drug/alcohol screenings. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Reliable, punctual, and committed to student safety. Working Conditions The position requires driving in various weather conditions. Work hours may vary depending on school schedules and student needs. Occasional lifting or assisting students with mobility needs may be required. Compensation/Working Conditions Per the GHSSA Master Agreement Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, and hear (in a quiet or noisy environment). The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust/focus. Work Environment The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate. Work is performed indoors, although there will be required outdoor activities. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, and work output of students. Mental Functions While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing in the English language, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, and compile and negotiate.
