Process Engineer

Position Summary Altillion Technologies is seeking a Process Engineer to support the design, scale-up, and optimization of advanced process technologies across the Altillion and ProSep portfolios. This is a primarily engineering-focused role, responsible for developing robust, operable, and economically sound process systems and supporting their deployment at commercial scale. Reporting to the Director of Engineering and Projects, the Process Engineer will own process design, equipment specification, and system optimization across a diverse set of process chemistries, working closely with internal technical teams and external engineering partners to deliver high-quality engineering packages and field-ready systems. Key Responsibilities Process Engineering and System Design Lead development of process flow diagrams (PFDs), P&IDs, and detailed engineering packages. Perform mass and energy balances, hydraulic calculations, and equipment sizing. Specify and select key process equipment including pumps, vessels, columns, membranes, heat exchangers, and reactor systems. Develop process control philosophies and support automation strategies. Collaborate with third-party engineering service providers on design and execution activities. Scale-Up and Project Execution Develop commercial-scale process designs, defining scale-up criteria, identifying risks, and implementing mitigation strategies. Lead process design for modular and field-deployable systems. Support capital project execution, including fabrication, installation, and commissioning. Refine and improve sizing and cost‑estimation tools to increase proposal and project accuracy. Process Optimization and Performance Analyze operational data to drive continuous improvement in recovery, throughput, and cost efficiency. Troubleshoot process issues in operating systems and perform root cause analysis. Identify and implement debottlenecking and optimization opportunities. Develop and refine operating envelopes and process limits for deployed systems. Feed and Process Integration Engineer systems to handle variable feed chemistries and flow conditions. Design and optimize pretreatment systems including filtration, chemical dosing, and phase separation. Integrate process systems with upstream and downstream operations. Technical Leadership and Cross-Functional Support Serve as the process engineering lead on technology development and deployment projects. Collaborate with technical teams to ensure technologies are engineered for scalability and operability. Support business development with process designs, technical proposals, and cost estimates. Health, Safety, and Compliance Incorporate process safety principles into all designs, including HAZOP participation and relief system design. Ensure compliance with applicable environmental and regulatory requirements. Develop and support standard operating procedures (SOPs) for commercial systems. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or a closely related discipline. 5+ years of experience in process engineering, process design, or technology scale-up. Demonstrated experience advancing processes to commercial-scale deployment. Strong expertise in fluid systems, separations, and chemical process design. Experience developing engineering deliverables including PFDs, P&IDs, and equipment specifications. Ability to work effectively in both office and field environments. Preferred Experience with critical minerals recovery or separations (for example, iodine, lithium or other high-value minerals). Experience with produced water or other complex, variable feed chemistries. Familiarity with modular and skid-mounted system design. Proficiency with process simulation tools such as UniSim, Aspen HYSYS, or Aspen Plus. Exposure to controls and automation integration in process systems. Key Skills Process design and scale-up execution. Equipment sizing and system integration across diverse process chemistries. Troubleshooting and root cause analysis in operating systems. Strong technical communication, documentation, and proposal writing. Ability to interpret analytical and operational data as a supporting input to engineering decisions. Comfortable operating in fast-paced, development-stage environments with evolving priorities.
