Safeway Store Director- Northern Virginia

Job Summary The Safeway Store Director is a dynamic and purpose-driven leader accountable for the store’s overall performance, culture, and operations. This role drives sales through people, fosters a growth mindset, builds inclusive high-performing teams, and focuses on customer and associate experience. Key Responsibilities Lead, motivate, and develop associates through coaching and recognition. Facilitate weekly planning sessions with Assistant Store Directors and Department Managers to align goals. Cascade information effectively to empower team members, and communicate transparently to foster clarity and trust. Build and develop the store management team, identify skill gaps, and create development plans. Coach and mentor leaders, provide feedback, stretch assignments, and growth opportunities. Partner with Assistant Store Directors for strategic hiring decisions to meet talent needs. Recruit diverse, high-performing teams and engage in community outreach. Foster a culture of belonging and shared success; celebrate wins. Drive associate retention and engagement through relationship‑building and career pathing. Inspire a customer‑first mindset, execute localized merchandising strategies, and leverage customer insights. Lead the execution of merchandising that reflects community preferences and enhances product discoverability. Champion frictionless customer journeys, integrating in‑store and online operations. Partner with HR, Operations Specialists, Sales Teams and other backstage functions to deploy resources. Use P&L, sales, purchases, labor and cost reporting to impact results. Own workforce management, schedule to meet demand, control labor, and ensure workforce efficiency. Conduct daily walkthroughs to maintain visual merchandising, cleanliness, and presentation. Obtain necessary licenses (Food Safety, Sanitation). Ensure compliance with legal requirements, company policies, and safety regulations. Maintain relationships with union officials and comply with collective bargaining agreements. Take responsibility for outcomes and empower teams to act with pride and accountability. Qualifications 3–5 years of progressive retail leadership experience, preferably in grocery or related services. High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree preferred. Proven success in team development, sales growth, and operational strategy. Strong analytical, communication, and coaching skills. Experience with workforce management tools and financial analysis platforms. Passion for inclusive leadership, coaching, and community engagement. Physical Environment Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods. Ability to reach, lift, stack, and maneuver objects up to approximately 55 pounds. May spend long periods at desk or computer terminal. Use of calculators, keyboards, telephone, computers, and other office equipment. Stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching may be required. Pay Transparency The pay range is $88,400 to $148,000 per year, but no less than the local minimum wage. Starting rates will vary based on location, experience, qualifications, and applicable collective bargaining agreement.
