Public Safety Training Coordinator

Job Summary Under the general supervision of the Public Safety Training Director or Associate Vice President's designee, the Training Coordinator assists with all training components for DSSEP staff and facilitates emergency preparedness education for the broader college community. The role ensures that non-sworn Public Safety Officers and campus stakeholders are equipped to respond to critical incidents, including evacuations and active assailant threats. The coordinator also provides general and refresher instruction on patrol duties, first aid, ethics, community relations, and campus safety. Qualifications Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Emergency Management, or a related field is preferred. Minimum Experience: Six years of experience in law enforcement or public safety. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Minimum Certifications: Florida General Instructor Techniques certification preferred; Incident Command System (ICS) certifications (e.g., IS-100, IS-700); Valid Florida Class E Driver’s License; CPR/AED and First Aid certification (current or ability to obtain within a designated timeframe); Additional FEMA/ICS coursework preferred; Active assailant/violence prevention instructor credentials (e.g., ALICE) preferred; Technical skills: ability to operate public safety radio systems and life‑safety equipment such as AEDs. Preferred Qualifications: At least 1 year of experience as a full‑time instructor; Experience developing a new‑hire academy and maintaining an annual in‑service training program for a public safety organization; Experience supporting emergency management exercises and documenting outcomes; Working knowledge of accreditation or compliance frameworks; Proficiency with LMS platforms, Microsoft Office, and classroom presentation technologies. Responsibilities Public Safety Personnel Training: Curriculum Development – assist in creating and updating course curriculum, lesson plans, and instructional guides to meet DSSEP, Broward College, Florida College System, and FDLE standards. Training Delivery – conduct classroom and hands‑on training on ethics, defensive tactics, patrol techniques, report writing, and Individual First Aid Kit application; stay current with state regulations. New Hire Training Academy – develop, coordinate, and teach the PSO new‑hire academy covering core policies, patrol operations, radio procedures, report writing, legal updates, customer service, de‑escalation, emergency response, and required safety skills; administer assessments, remediation plans, and coordinate schedules. Field Training Management – oversee the department’s Field Training Officer program, ensuring new hires transition from academy to active duty. Training Compliance & Certification – maintain compliance with federal, state, and local requirements; manage certification processes and support staff professional development. Compliance, Documentation & Records – maintain attendance, test scores, performance evaluations; support audits and accreditation activities. Training Needs Assessment & Planning – conduct needs assessments, build annual and quarterly plans, align calendars with operational coverage and regulatory deadlines. Training Evaluation & Continuous Improvement – create assessments, evaluate performance, analyze results, and update lesson plans. Learning Management & Training Resources – maintain course rosters and electronic training files; support LMS and classroom technology; coordinate space reservations. Training Equipment & Safety Readiness – prepare, inspect, and maintain training equipment; verify safe setup and report hazards. Campus Emergency Preparedness: Critical Incident Drills – assist in planning and executing high‑stakes drills, including active shooter and campus‑wide evacuations. Stakeholder Education – provide specialized safety training and Emergency Quick Guide orientations to students, faculty, and staff. Subject Matter Resource – serve as a resource for crisis intervention and de‑escalation training. Scenario‑Based Simulations – facilitate dynamic training simulations to reinforce decision‑making and teamwork. Training Safety – enforce safety protocols during all training sessions and exercises. Liaison Duties – coordinate joint training exercises with agencies, educational institutions, and campus departments. After‑Action Reviews – support AAR development and corrective action plans; track action items and facilitate follow‑up training. Exercise Design & Incident Command Integration – assist with exercise design and reinforce Incident Command System concepts. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of public safety operations, patrol practices, emergency response, and campus safety principles. Instruction design using adult learning principles and delivery of scenario‑based training. Performance evaluation, documentation, and coaching to improve competency. Strong written communication for lesson plans, after‑action reviews, and documentation. Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration with FTOs, subject matter experts, and partners. Ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain confidentiality, and exercise sound judgment in high‑stakes environments. Work Conditions: Essential Personnel – may be required to respond during campus emergencies, suspended operations, or scheduled weekend drills. Physical Demands – must participate in field training exercises, including patrolling on foot, climbing stairs, or demonstrating defensive tactics.
