Position Title: Medical Technologist/Point-of-Care (POC/MLT/MLS)

Shift: Day Shift (7 AM - 7 PM)

Job Type: PRN/Casual

Facility Type: 20-bed Small-Format Hospital (10 ER, 10 Inpatient)

Position Overview

This role is designed to offer technical support and patient care tailored to individual needs across designated areas. Responsibilities include the collection and analysis of laboratory specimens, along with reporting results in accordance with established laboratory protocols and procedures. The position also involves acting as a general supervisor for assigned laboratory activities.

Essential Job Functions
  • Conducts tasks and complex tests in all designated laboratory areas, adhering to established protocols to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as accreditation standards.
  • Collects and processes specimens using established protocols and technical expertise.
  • Performs quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting to ensure the proper functioning of instruments and procedures.
  • Validates and communicates test results, assisting with technical troubleshooting and quality assurance issues.
  • Adheres to safety practices, including biohazard protocols, exposure control plans, and infection control measures, while maintaining necessary documentation for compliance.
  • Assists in proficiency testing for each test, implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Encourages collaboration among clinical departments and affiliated services to ensure a coordinated approach to laboratory services and resolution of customer issues.
  • Coordinates and executes all pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic laboratory activities in partnership with the Laboratory Director and Technical Consultant.
  • Supports patient care activities within the scope of state regulations, which may include phlebotomy, IV starts, EKG initiation, vital signs monitoring, and superficial wound care.
  • Ensures patient safety based on age and condition.
  • Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
  • Ensures a clean and safe environment, performing proper aseptic techniques and infection control measures.
  • Assists with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
Other Job Functions
  • Prepares patients and provides support during examinations or treatments.
  • Maintains laboratory and patient care areas with necessary supplies.
  • Assists with patient restraints and maintains safety precautions; collects and documents data related to patient needs and behaviors.
  • Travels to various facility locations as required.
  • Participates in staff meetings or other mandatory gatherings as needed.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological/Physical Sciences or Medical Laboratory Science is required.
  • Current BLS certification from a recognized organization is required.
  • Market-Specific Qualifications:
    • Pennsylvania Market:
      • A minimum of 6 years of core lab experience is required (experience begins with Medical Laboratory Courses).
      • Completion of Act 33 (Child Abuse History Clearance) and Act 73 (FBI Fingerprint Criminal History Clearance) within the last 5 years, or must be obtained prior to the start date.
    • Las Vegas Market:
      • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technologist (MLS/MLT) by a recognized body.
      • A valid State of Nevada license as a Laboratory General Supervisor, or the ability to obtain this license within 6 months of hire.
      • A minimum of 3 years of lab experience in non-waived specialties, with 2 years in a licensed laboratory or a hospital, university, or health department under a director with a doctoral degree.
  • Experience with IV starts, phlebotomy, and EKG initiation is a plus (not required); training will be provided post-hire.
