Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree
• A valid Louisiana Nursing License. Must obtain an ancillary certificate issued by the LA Department of Education in School Nursing within 2 months of hire date.
• Prefer a minimum of three (3) years of experience in an educational setting. Previous nursing supervision experience desired.
• A Master's Degree will suffice for one year of the required experience.

Managerial Responsibilities:

• Manage LSDVI nursing services including overall supervision of any medical needs of the students as well as all coordination of services prescribed by contract professionals.
• Initiate policy and procedures relevant to all aspects of nursing for approval by the Non-Academic Services Director and the SSD Superintendent and exercise responsibility for implementation of approved policy and procedures; develop and establish long range strategic plans.
• Exhibit understanding of children with disabilities and their needs. Demonstrate awareness of specialists, agencies, and organizations that serve children with disabilities and their families, especially children who are deaf or visually impaired.
• Demonstrate appropriate and effective office management skills such as planning, organizing, implementing and monitoring of Student health plans and directing health care services to students.
• Plan, direct and implement professional standards of care which includes twenty-four hour student care management for the instructional and residential programs for LSD and LSVI.
• Serve as the resource on all Nursing Policy and Procedure development and assist the Non-Academic Services Director in annual reviews and revisions of same.
• Prepare and submit projected budgetary needs annually and approve weekly supply requisitions and requests.
• Maintain complete and accurate records and exercise confidentiality of information in accordance with requirements of the law.
• Complete reports as requested by the Non-Academic Services Director, SSD Superintendent and/or school's physicians.
• Maintain a positive relationship with professional associates, state and local agencies, the community and the parents of the students and maintain a communication network with other departments and outside agencies for use as a resource for student medical needs.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• Supervise and manages nursing services staff providing leadership and coordination for a team approach.
• Demonstrate appropriate and effective interpersonal skills in providing administrative and technical support to nursing personnel and in resolving students' and physicians' complaints.
• Plan and direct 24 hour licensed nursing services for LSDVI students and schedule assignments of professional staff according to student care needs ensuring that proper procedure is followed.
• Provide leadership with student case management and team problem solving.
• Ensure licenses of staff are current and in compliance.
• Exercise good judgment in making decisions.
• Counsel with staff and give input to upper management concerning promotion or dismissal of employees.
• Interview applicants and makes recommendations concerning hiring.
• Conduct supervisor orientation for new personnel.
• Delegate responsibilities as appropriate.
• Conduct performance evaluations with staff according to required timelines and maintain evaluation records and reports as mandated by law.
• Provide for staff development; educate staff on appropriate policies and procedures related to student care, individual health plans, medical conditions, etc.; provide in-service activities regarding medical issues.

Programmatic Responsibilities:

• Evaluate student health care practices according to established standards and implement quality assurance methods to insure that standards are met.
• Conduct or assist other health care professionals with examination of students, complete necessary documents and work cooperatively with school officials and outside investigation authorities.
• Initiate or respond to various medical needs/issues; direct the administration of medication as prescribed by health care professionals.
• Direct the reviewing, analyzing, and documenting of relevant information regarding student health services and provide information as appropriate on student needs and progress to students, staff, teachers, and parents.
• Develop and interpret policies, procedures and standards of care in accordance with overall policies implemented by both LSD and LSVI schools.
• Act as liaison with families, other facilities and law enforcement agencies concerning students' medical care, medical demands, or incidents, etc.
• Exhibit responsibility for infection control.
• Perform all nursing duties required of lower level professional nurses and paraprofessionals when needed.
• Ensure that all state mandated screenings are performed.
• Provide mandatory trainings for school personnel.
