Academic Coordinator (20%) and Adjunct Professor (80%)
This position opening is for an individual to serve, as both, a part-time Academic Coordinator (20%) and part-time Adjunct Professor (80%) position. Each position description is detailed below:
Academic Coordinator duties (20%)
NATURE AND PURPOSE
Academic Coordinator titles are for appointees who administer academic programs that provide service closely related to the teaching or research mission of the University. The Academic Coordinator provides service to the campus' Nutrition Department related to accredited programs, for example, serving as liaison between the Department and the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), and works closely or jointly with faculty.
An Academic Coordinator is primarily an administrative position. Any contributions to teaching would be considered part of the University and Public Service and evaluated as part of service. An Academic Coordinator is not a faculty title and as such is not eligible to be an Instructor of Record. Appointees in the Academic Coordinator title series cannot be independently responsible for conducting regular courses but may provide a guest lecture in their area of expertise.
An appointee in the Academic Coordinator title series is not provided automatic Principal Investigator status. This position serves in the Department of Nutrition as the Assistant Director of the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD), which is embedded within the Clinical Nutrition major at UC Davis.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE
Responsibilities include administration, coordination and management of programs, professional competence and activity, and university and public service.
I. ADMINISTRATION AND COORDINATION OF PROGRAMS (90%)
The appointee will be responsible for the administration and coordination of the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) in close collaboration with the DPD Director. The DPD is embedded within the Clinical Nutrition major at UC Davis and is one of two undergraduate major tracks (Nutritional Biology and Clinical Nutrition) in the Department of Nutrition. The DPD is an integral part of the academic program of the department and is consistent with the mission of the department. The DPD must meet standards set by the Academy and ACEND, the national professional accrediting body within the field of dietetics. The DPD represents a program of moderate complexity. For example, independent judgments and coordination are required at a variety of levels external to the university.
A primary responsibility of this position is to manage the academic program in collaboration with the DPD Director to assure that the curriculum, program outcomes and management activities meet or exceed the ACEND standards necessary to maintain accreditation status and fulfill the mission of the university department. The duties of this position include participation in:
• Academic program planning and development (e.g. coordination of course content among faculty who teach DPD-specific courses and implementation of curriculum changes)
• Coordination of laboratory practicum at a variety of sites external to the Davis campus for 50-100 students per year (e.g. Davis and Sacramento area hospitals, schools and food service establishments)
• Organize and carry out program evaluations; implement procedures and activities to continually improve outcomes and program quality; implement procedures to track student learning objectives and competencies
• Assist in preparation of required DPD reports such as annual reports and 7-year self-study reports and coordination of accreditation site visits
• Communication with outside constituencies on a state-wide and national level (the Academy and ACEND, as well as other university DPD programs) as needed regarding accreditation standards and activities
• Advising DPD students regarding application processes for supervised practice programs, graduate programs and continuing professional education, and providing letters of recommendation
• Academic Program Advising for DPD students regarding DPD coursework and program competencies
• Frequent collaboration with DPD Director and Staff Academic Advisors and student support advising staff regarding DPD activities and clinical nutrition student issues
• Other duties as needed for DPD management (e.g. oversight of teaching assistants associated with the management of laboratory experience relevant to food service and hospital dietetics).
Appointee should also demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with individuals in academic and supervised practice settings outside of the University of California Davis, and with national organizations such as the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (the Academy) and the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5%)
The incumbent must show evidence of continuing professional growth, teaching expertise and continued scholarly activity in their discipline. They will provide intellectual leadership and scholarship and participate in relevant professional societies and conferences related to clinical nutrition and dietetics. The candidate may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups, or at seminars, meetings, or educational functions.
Ill. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)
The incumbent will participate in the governance of the clinical nutrition major accredited program, Nutrition department and university through appropriate roles such as participation in committees and policy formulation. They may provide presentations or service in a liaison capacity with community groups, public, governmental, and private agencies. Coordinating a seminar course, such as First Year Seminars, or clinical nutrition internships, is expected.
Adjunct Professor duties (80%)
This position involves predominately teaching as well as participation in research and scholarly activities within the designated expertise of Clinical Nutrition and dietetics. The Nutrition department will compensate the teaching portion of the appointment, while the research portion will be self-funded, with research effort set at 15% on a variable basis. The rank and step will be determined by experience.
NATURE AND PURPOSE
a. Titles in the Adjunct Professor series may be assigned:
- to individuals who are predominantly engaged in research or other creative work and who participate in teaching, or
- to individuals who contribute primarily to teaching and have a limited responsibility for research or other creative work; these individuals may be professional practitioners of appropriate distinction. Appointees with titles in this series also engage in University and public service consistent with their assignments. b. Appointees may serve full-time, part-time, or at 0 percent time. c. Adjunct Professor titles are intended to be supported primarily by non-State funds. For purposes of this policy, non-State funds are all funds other than General funds ).

This position will participate in the ongoing instruction of the Didactic Program in Dietetics (Clinical Nutrition major). Specifically, the incumbent will serve as the instructor of record or co-instructor of record for three to four of the program's podium courses per year (typically NUT 116AL, FSM 120, FSM 120L and FSM 122, but may change as needed) and provide occasional lectures in other courses in the program and the department. The incumbent may train and mentor undergraduate and graduate students and serve as a member of graduate groups.
II. RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY WORK (15% VARIABLE)
Conduct an independent research program on projects within their area of expertise in Nutrition, where they will foster collaboration among Nutrition Department faculty and graduate students. Other research duties will include managing the budget and projects according to sound management principles
