Inpatient Psychiatry Director - Academic Hospital

We are partnering with a well-established hospital system to recruit a Director of Inpatient Psychiatry to lead and clinically oversee a growing inpatient psychiatric service. This is a hands-on leadership role combining direct patient care, resident supervision, and program leadership, with a clear succession plan as the current Director transitions toward retirement. The inpatient service is expanding, including residency program growth and the conversion of an existing detox unit into an additional inpatient psychiatry unit, creating a strong opportunity for a physician leader who enjoys academic medicine and operational involvement.

Job Function:

• Serve as Clinical Director for Inpatient Psychiatry, providing leadership, oversight, and direction across inpatient psych units
• Maintain full clinical responsibilities, including direct patient care on the inpatient units (would be responsible for working with 1 resident to take care of 8 patients while overseeing the attendings who have 2 residents covering 16)
• Supervise psychiatry residents at varying levels of training; ensure high-quality teaching, evaluation, and clinical oversight
• Collaborate closely with the Chair of Psychiatry, Nursing Leadership, and Hospital Administration
• Ensure compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, and state DOH behavioral health regulations
• Lead or participate in quality initiatives, incident reviews, and performance improvement efforts
• Act as a clinical resource across departments (ED, outpatient psychiatry, community programs)
• Provide cross-coverage for departmental leadership as needed
• Participate in committees focused on quality, safety, and patient experience
• Academic inpatient psychiatry service with an expanding residency program
• Multiple inpatient units staffed with residents at different training levels
• Attending physicians supervise residents rather than carrying independent patient panels in some rotations

Job Requirements:

• MD or DO, Board Certified in Psychiatry (ABPN)
• Active or eligible state medical license
• Minimum 2+ years of inpatient psychiatry experience
• Prior experience supervising residents strongly preferred
• Interest in academic medicine, program development, and clinical leadership
• Strong communication and collaborative leadership style
