Physician - Orthopedic Surgery - EDRP Eligible

Summary The Orthopedic Physician/Orthopedic Surgeon provides comprehensive orthopedic care to Veterans in an outpatient, inpatient, procedural, and/or surgical setting as assigned at St. Cloud VA Medical Center. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements United States citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy. Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine. Degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of completion. Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Residency training: Physicians must have completed an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification. One of the following: Approved residency program per ACGME or AOA. One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship or transitional year) followed by two years of independent practice in the U.S. Non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the U.S. related to the position. Residents currently enrolled in an accredited program and who otherwise meet the basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs); PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis. Applicants must be proficient in spoken and written English. Preferred experience: Board Certified or Board Eligible in Orthopedic Surgery. Physical requirements: Regular standing, walking, bending, reaching, sitting, use of hands for fine motor clinical tasks; ability to assist with patient positioning, examinations and procedures; visual, manual, hearing, speech, and cognitive ability to perform clinical assessments, procedures, documentation, and patient communication. The incumbent must be physically and mentally able to perform essential functions efficiently, with or without reasonable accommodation, and without hazard to self or others. Duties Provide direct clinical care, including examinations, evaluations, diagnoses, and treatment of Veterans with orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions, injuries, deformities, disorders, and functional limitations. Offer outpatient orthopedic care—new patient evaluations, follow‑up appointments, preoperative assessments, postoperative evaluations, and ongoing management of orthopedic conditions. Review and document patient histories, physical examination findings, diagnostic studies, treatment plans, informed consent discussions, procedures, operative findings, follow‑up needs, and clinical outcomes. Order, review, and interpret diagnostic studies within scope of practice, including radiographs, advanced imaging, laboratory testing, electrodiagnostic studies, and other clinically indicated evaluations. Develop, implement, and modify patient‑centered treatment plans based on assessment, findings, patient goals, evidence‑based standards, and available options. Provide non‑operative orthopedic management: medication, bracing, casting, splinting, injections, activity modification, therapy referrals, assistive devices, and other conservative modalities. Perform orthopedic procedures and surgeries within licensure, clinical privileges, and facility capability. Provide surgical care for appropriate orthopedic conditions such as degenerative joint disease, fractures, tendon or ligament injuries, joint disorders, arthritis‑related conditions, soft tissue injuries, and other musculoskeletal conditions based on granted privileges and facility needs. Explain diagnoses, treatment options, surgical and non‑surgical alternatives, expected outcomes, risks, benefits, and potential complications to patients and caregivers clearly. Provide post‑operative care—including follow‑up assessment, wound evaluation, recovery progress review, complication management, activity restrictions, therapy planning, and coordination of return‑to‑function goals. Manage orthopedic consults, return‑to‑clinic orders, surgical requests, procedural scheduling, and follow‑up care promptly and appropriately. Perform administrative duties related to patient care management—progress notes, histories and physicals, operative reports, discharge summaries, consult responses, encounter forms, orders, and other required documentation. Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team—nursing, anesthesia, surgical providers, podiatry, mid‑level providers, therapists, prosthetics and orthotics, and medical support staff—to ensure coordinated, efficient delivery of care.
