Fairbanks Morse Defense is seeking a hands-on Senior Field Service Technician to install, commission, troubleshoot, repair, and overhaul mission-critical equipment supporting U.S. military and government customers.

Equipment You Could Work On

• Large diesel engines
• Electrical controls and electronic engine-control systems
• Cranes and davits
• Weapons elevators used to move and handle mission-critical equipment
• Personnel and equipment elevators
• Roll-up doors
• Pneumatic and PLC-controlled systems

This is not a traditional shop position. You will travel up to 75% domestically and internationally, working at military, marine, industrial, and customer locations alongside Fairbanks Morse Defense technicians, technicians from other companies, shipboard personnel, and military customers.

Assignments may place you in extreme heat or cold, at heights, in tight or confined spaces, and around active industrial and marine equipment. You must be adaptable, safety-focused, comfortable using a laptop or tablet, and ready to lead when the situation demands it.

Job Summary

The Senior Field Service Technician (SrFST) is responsible for the installation, commissioning, and scheduled and emergency service of a variety of Fairbanks Morse Defense products, including diesel engines, electrical controls, cranes, elevators, weapons elevators, roll-up doors, and davits.

The SrFST leads field activities, ensures customer satisfaction, and maintains effective communication with customers and internal teams. This technician provides technical leadership, supports and mentors less-experienced associates, and professionally represents Fairbanks Morse Defense at customer locations.

This is a highly visible, mission-critical role. Strong verbal and written communication, sound judgment, technical expertise, and professional conduct are imperative.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Role

• Plan and achieve goals based on judgment and experience.
• Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair products with minimal supervision.
• Lead and direct regional associates in their work.
• Oversee complete engine overhauls on qualified engines.
• Perform occasional shop duties, including parts inspection, assembly, and testing.

Technical Responsibilities

• Provide on-the-job training and customer equipment training.
• Provide first-level escalation support to associates.
• Assist customers with on-site and telephone troubleshooting.
• Collaborate with Product Engineering to resolve equipment issues.
• Implement service documentation, including Engineering Change Orders.

Safety

• Follow all safety guidelines and wear the appropriate personal protective equipment.
• Report accidents and injuries immediately.
• Complete all required annual safety training.
• Work safely in conditions that may include extreme heat or cold, heights, tight spaces, and active industrial or marine equipment.

Administration

• Submit accurate and timely reports, including timecards, expenses, and project-closure documentation.
• Maintain all required certifications.
• Ensure company property, including vehicles and equipment, is properly maintained.
• Provide estimated arrival times to customers when necessary.
• Use a laptop or tablet to access technical information, communicate with internal teams, and complete required documentation.

Customer Satisfaction

• Communicate clearly and professionally with customers and internal teams.
• Complete all required maintenance documentation and provide it to customers.
• Strive for first-time fixes to minimize customer downtime.
• Maintain customer satisfaction in accordance with company standards.
• Work effectively alongside FMD associates, third-party technicians, and military and government customer personnel.

Performance

• Maximize efficiency by combining service opportunities when appropriate.
• Evaluate equipment to determine the appropriate billing status.
• Follow company dress-code and safety requirements.
• Serve as a professional role model for junior technicians.
• Lead, coach, and mentor less-experienced technicians in the field.

Other Duties

• Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of three years of experience as an FMD Field Service Technician.
• One of the following:
  • An associate degree in a technical discipline and four years of military experience; or
  • Four years of military experience or similar industry experience.

Technical Skills

• Knowledge of diesel engines, spark-gas test equipment, and controls.
• Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and blueprints.
• Solid understanding of pneumatic, PLC, and electronic engine controls.
• Experience independently troubleshooting and repairing equipment.
• Ability to manage technical activities and lead others.
• Ability to provide technical telephone support and equipment training.
• Strong mechanical aptitude.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Ability to work comfortably with a laptop or tablet.

Communication and Professionalism

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with customers, military personnel, internal teams, and technicians from other organizations.
• Ability to maintain a professional presence and exercise sound judgment in the field.
• Willingness and ability to lead and mentor junior technicians while representing Fairbanks Morse Defense.

Travel and Licensing

• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability and willingness to travel up to 75% domestically and internationally.

Physical and Work-Environment Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to regularly lift up to 35 pounds.
• Ability to meet specific vision requirements, including color and peripheral vision.
• Ability to work in extreme heat and cold when assignments require it.
• Ability to work safely at heights and in tight or confined spaces.
• Ability to work in active industrial, shipboard, marine, military, and customer environments.
• Ability to wear required PPE and comply with all company and site-specific safety requirements.
