The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking an Occupational Health Physician to provide clinical direction for the Laboratory's Occupational Medical Office within the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Group. In this role, you will combine direct patient care with strategic program planning to protect the health, safety, and readiness of a highly technical workforce engaged in laboratory research and field-testing activities.Working collaboratively occupational health nurses, EHS professionals, and external healthcare providers, you will provide medical expertise across a broad range of occupational health programs. As an Occupational Health Physician, you will... Provide comprehensive occupational medical services including pre-placement examinations, Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals, firefighter and safety-sensitive medical evaluations, fitness-for-duty assessments, and specialized occupational medical examinations supporting laboratory, field, maritime, and other mission activities. Evaluate, diagnose, and treat occupational injuries and illnesses while providing episodic and urgent medical care, coordinating specialty referrals, and supporting timely recovery and return-to-work planning. Interpret diagnostic testing including pulmonary function testing, audiometric evaluations, vision screening, laboratory studies, electrocardiograms, and other occupational health assessments. Provide medical oversight for workers' compensation cases, work restrictions, disability management, and ADA accommodation recommendations. Lead medical surveillance programs supporting staff working with chemical, biological, radiological, laser, respiratory, hearing conservation, and other occupational hazards. Direct preventive health initiatives including immunizations, travel medicine, allergy immunotherapy, health promotion activities, and early intervention programs designed to improve workforce health. Serve as the Medical Review Officer (MRO) with oversight for drug and alcohol testing programs. Partner with Environmental Health & Safety professionals during workplace assessments, exposure evaluations, incident investigations, and health-related risk assessments. Ensure Occupational Medical Office operations comply with OSHA, HIPAA, FMCSA, and other applicable federal, state, and professional standards. Collaborate on continuous improvement initiatives that enhance clinical quality, operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, customer service, and staff well-being. Through partnership with the Lab's IT and applications teams, provide strategic leadership for the discovery, evaluation, and potential selection, implementation, and optimization of a new Occupational Health Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, including workflow design, clinical documentation standards, reporting capabilities, regulatory compliance, and staff training. Serve as the principal occupational medicine advisor on workforce health issues, emerging occupational health risks, and medical program strategy. Qualifications You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you... Possess a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree from an accredited institution. Hold an active, unrestricted medical license in Maryland or have the ability to obtain licensure before your start date. Are a certified FMCSA National Registry Medical Examiner. Are Board Eligible or Board Certified in Occupational Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or a closely related specialty. Have at least five years of clinical practice experience, including experience in Occupational Medicine. Have demonstrated expertise in occupational injury and illness management, medical surveillance, fitness-for-duty evaluations, and return-to-work planning. Possess solid understanding of OSHA regulations, occupational exposure hazards, workers' compensation, and occupational medicine standards. Demonstrate outstanding clinical judgment, communication skills, and collaboration. Are proficient using Electronic Health Record (EHR/EMR) systems and standard business software. Have demonstrated ability to partner effectively with occupational health nursing staff in a collaborative, team-based care model, fostering mutual respect, shared clinical decision-making, and coordinated delivery of occupational health services without direct supervisory responsibility. Hold Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Are able to obtain Medical Review Officer (MRO) certification and CAOHC Professional Supervisor of Audiometry (CPS/A) certification within 90 days of hire, if not currently certified. Are able to obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Have successfully implemented or led the deployment of an Occupational Health Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system. Have experience running comprehensive occupational medical surveillance programs supporting research, manufacturing, or industrial operations. Have experience collaborating within multidisciplinary healthcare teams and developing occupational health strategy. Have experience integrating quality improvement methodologies into occupational health practice. Have knowledge of NIOSH Total Worker Health principles and experience applying them within a complex organization. The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
