Transit Maintenance Assistant

The Transit Maintenance Assistant (full-time) performs non-skilled work related to the general cleaning, sanitizing and maintenance of transit facilities and vehicles. The work is performed in accordance with established procedures and accepted trade practices and requires safe work habits. Transit Maintenance Assistants are critical to the daily upkeep of vehicles and facilities to ensure public transit service is safe, clean and sanitary for customers and employees. These positions perform essential daily tasks and are an important part of the Shoreline Metro team. This position works a flexible schedule based on department requirements.

This position works a four (4) day work week, currently Tuesday through Friday, 6:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Overtime and weekend work may be required depending on needs of the department.

Responsibilities

• Report to work each workday on or before designated check-in time in proper attire including steeltoed safety boots, slacks or jeans, short or long-sleeved shirt, provided coveralls and personal protective equipment (PPE); • Perform general maintenance on transit facilities including cleaning, sweeping, vacuuming, and garbage and snow removal; • Maintain a clean, professional and presentable area for customers and employees at the Transfer Point; • Maintain a clean, organized and safe work area for all transit employees; • Perform routine cleaning of restrooms, offices, and lunchroom for transit employees; • Perform routine sanitizing of buses, offices and lunchroom; • Perform routine fueling of transit buses and support vehicles; • Perform routine exterior cleaning of transit buses and support vehicles; • Maintain the interior cleanliness of transit buses and support vehicles; • Perform light maintenance on facilities, bus shelters, and equipment (as directed by the Maintenance Foreman); • Assist the Transit Operations Supervisor(s) and Transit Coordinators with bus related issues; • Observe and promote safety for the department; • Act as a professional representative of Shoreline Metro and the City of Sheboygan; • Work in a team environment by establishing and maintaining effective and cooperative working relationships; • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

• Must be able to properly and safely operate up to a 35 foot passenger bus, service vehicles, maintenance equipment, forklift and maintenance shop machinery. • Must be able to work nights, weekends, extra hours and/or overtime as required by department needs; • Must pass DOT physical examination for drivers and maintain those standards as a condition of employment. • Must be able to demonstrate an ability to read, understand, retain and recite information in training manuals, notices and standard operating procedures. • Must submit to FTA required drug and alcohol testing requirements including but not limited to preemployment, post-accident, random and reasonable suspicion testing as a condition of employment. • Must successfully complete pre-employment drug test and physical exam, orientation training and 6month probationary period. • High school diploma or GED; related vocational schooling, Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education, certifications and experience may be considered and is preferred. • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid WI Commercial Driver's License, Class B with passenger "P" endorsement. Air brake restriction must also be removed. Valid CDL must be obtained in a timely fashion during training. Experience operating a commercial vehicle preferred. • Must have a safe driving record. • Must be able to provide revenue service in emergency situations whereas the alternative would be lost transit service (accidents and extreme driver shortage for example); • Should have 1-2 years minimum experience in a ground's maintenance position preferably in public transit, public administration or equivalent experience. • Must successfully complete orientation, training and 90-day probationary period.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Must possess a demonstrated ability to work with little to no supervision; • Must possess good communication skills and be able to follow and communicate oral or written instructions and have the ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form. • Must have ability to efficiently perform tasks with completion in a timely manner; • Must be able to troubleshoot problems and create viable solutions; • Awareness of occupational hazards, environmental regulations and safe work practices; • Ability to safely lift up to75 lbs.; • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions; • Capable of repeated standing, bending, kneeling and reaching overhead;
