Housing Staff Attorney/Clinical Supervisor (Temporary)

HOUSING & HOMELESSNESS ADVOCACY PRACTICE East Bay Community Law Center (EBCLC) is a nonprofit legal services organization and a community‑based clinical program for U.C. Berkeley Law School. With a dual service and teaching mission, EBCLC is a racial justice organization committed to building a culturally diverse workplace centered on equity. The organization employs about 50 staff and 90 law students annually, operates with a $7 million budget, and provides free legal services to over 4,000 clients per year while engaging in legislative and policy advocacy in Alameda County. Description The Housing & Homelessness Advocacy Practice Temporary Staff Attorney represents low‑income tenants in eviction lawsuits, advocates for tenants and unhoused community members facing housing‑related legal problems, and helps create more just and humane housing policies for Alameda County. The role requires a client‑centered advocate with strong writing, organizational, and litigation skills, experience providing direct legal services to low‑income people, and a commitment to mentoring the next generation of legal advocates. The attorney will also support the training and supervision of law students in EBCLC’s clinics. Temporary Position This is a temporary position that will run for six months beginning in August 2026. Primary Responsibilities Represent low‑income tenants in unlawful detainer cases, subsidized housing hearings, rent board hearings, and other civil proceedings. Advocate for the unhoused community through litigation, client counseling, and policy initiatives. Supervise students in weekly Tenants’ Rights Workshops providing legal consultations on a broad range of housing issues. Assist unrepresented tenants in settlement negotiations at the monthly courthouse clinic located at the Hayward Hall of Justice. Conduct outreach and provide legal consultations to tenants in the community. Support the training and supervision of law students. Collaborate with other staff at EBCLC to provide holistic, wrap‑around services. Maintain accurate and detailed records concerning client services in accordance with EBCLC policies and funding requirements. Complete all administrative tasks required for client work. Participate in ongoing professional development to improve client services and student supervision. Perform additional tasks as assigned by supervisor. Workplace Expectations Office presence: The position is hybrid. The attorney is expected to work at the Adeline office in Berkeley at least three days per week from 9 am to 5 pm in person. Additional field work may be required in client homes, public housing authorities, social services agencies, and other locations throughout Alameda County. Remote work will be scheduled by supervisor based on programmatic and client needs, and EBCLC will provide necessary equipment. Salary and Benefits Starting salary for this exempt position is \$85,000‑\$108,000, depending on law school graduation date. Benefits include fully paid health insurance (medical, dental, and vision) for employees and dependents, life and disability insurance, a paid leave policy with 27 paid holidays, sick time, and 20 vacation days accrued per year (increasing with seniority), flexible spending accounts for qualified health, dependent care, and commute expenditures, and retirement options. Minimum Qualifications J.D. required. Member of the California State Bar in good standing or scheduled to take the California bar exam in Summer 2026. Willingness to travel to visit clients, attend court, and engage with the community in Alameda County as needed, including in single‑room occupancy hotels, shelters, homes with excessive belongings, and environments with pets. Ability to receive and incorporate constructive feedback. Preferred Qualifications Experience in unlawful detainer, landlord‑tenant, or other relevant litigation.
