American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter (Level II) 6.5 hours per day, 9 months per year Fair Labor Standards Act Status Non-Exempt Qualifications Certified by the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), both written and performance OR Passed the National Interpreting Certification Graduate from an Interpreter Training Program preferred Possess a high school degree or comparable equivalent Thirty (30) semester credits or forty‑five (45) quarter credits from a post‑secondary institution at an accredited university, college, community college or business school Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language (ASL), both voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice Must demonstrate skills in interview Knowledge of Code of Ethics specific to the role of interpreter Other Requirements Ability to lift and move moderately sized objects up to 50 pounds Regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position to achieve program requirements Essential Functions Work in a flexible and cooperative manner Treat co-workers, supervisors, students, parents and others with dignity and respect at all times Serve as a positive role model for students, and practice the behaviors that are expected of our students Ability to move around school facilities with students May be reassigned with little or no notice due to nature of work and student schedules Assist hearing‑impaired students in mainstream classrooms. Includes using ASL to interpret the lesson as taught by the classroom teacher, helping the student ask questions of the teacher Works with multiple students or with small groups of students Assist the teacher with communicating the lesson plan, working with tutorial groups and helping with supervision Works with individuals or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by classroom teachers as a tutor Assist hearing‑impaired students in the interaction and communication with hearing students and staff Interpret for hearing‑impaired students participating in regular classes, extracurricular events and for adult deaf in conferences Ability to voice‑to‑sign and sign‑to‑voice or cue‑to‑voice and voice‑to‑cue Must be able to drive between schools to address student need when colleague absences are reported Must be flexible to reassignment if deaf student is absent for a day or longer Regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position to achieve program requirements Benefits/Compensation Salary range: New employees will start at the minimum hourly rate in the salary range. However, employees who have verified prior years of service in a similar occupational status from other Washington School Districts or Education School Districts, may receive experience credit towards salary placement. Salary schedules can be accessed here. Benefits: Employees who are anticipated to work at least 630 hours may be eligible for health, dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, life, and disability insurance benefits. Retirement: Employees may be eligible for retirement benefits through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS). Eligibility is based on FTE. Detailed information can be found here. Additional negotiated leave options can be found in the associated Comprehensive Professional Agreement (CPA) for this position VAESP CPA.
