Overview Old Dominion seeks a Local P&D or City Driver to operate tractor‑trailer combinations between service centers and customer locations. The driver will handle loading, unloading, and secure freight, ensuring timely and safe delivery. Job Summary Drivers operate various tractor‑trailer combinations between company service centers and customer facilities or work sites within the service center's geographic area, sorting, handling, loading, and/or unloading freight at company and customer locations. Primary Responsibilities Operate vehicle safely within DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspection, maintenance, and transport of hazardous materials. Meet or exceed the U.S. Department of Transportation medical standards and successfully pass a drug and alcohol test. Load and unload freight on trailers using a motorized forklift, pallet jack, or manually in compliance with state and federal DOT guidelines. Use various loading techniques, such as tight or cross loading. Transport self and/or freight continuously within the service center on non‑forgiving surfaces. Use the Dock Yard Management System to monitor freight shipment locations throughout the service center. Read and interpret shipping labels and understand shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, overage/damage movement reports, and exception forms. Hand load, rewrap, or stack freight as necessary, and secure freight inside trailers using pallets, straps, rope, and other tools. Maintain frequent contact with service center personnel in a fast‑pace and deadline‑oriented environment. Be available to meet customer pickup and delivery schedules. Job Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Ability to read, write, speak English and perform simple mathematical calculations. Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with double/triple trailer, tanker, and hazardous material endorsements. Acceptable motor vehicle record. 12 months of tractor‑trailer driving experience, or graduation from a state‑certified, licensed, and safety‑department‑approved driving school, or completion of the Old Dominion Truck Driver Training program. Ability to operate handheld tablets when required. Good oral communication skills and ability to follow instructions via two‑way radio or phone. Knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems. Knowledge of DOT regulations governing safe driving, HOS, inspection, maintenance, and transport of hazardous materials. Must meet or exceed the U.S. Department of Transportation medical standards. Must successfully pass a drug test and, if applicable, an alcohol test. Must satisfactorily pass the Old Dominion orientation/training program. Minimum age of 22 years. Physical Demands Ability to sit and remain alert while driving for up to 11 hours. Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, squat, push, pull, and lift freight up to 500lb, with occasional handling of freight over 300lb, and lift and carry load up to 100lb over a distance of 100ft. Ability to enter and exit the vehicle cab, climb steps, and balance on cab floor levels 36‑66in. above ground. Ability to install and remove tire chains when required by weather. Use of hands to get in/out of the truck, wrap shrink wrap, secure pallets, use pallet jack or hand truck, steer, and operate lift gates. Use cognitive skills: attention, memory, auditory and visual processing for inspections, driving, reading manifests, tablets, navigation and road signs. Ability to shift a manual transmission and operate foot pedals. Must successfully pass any required physical testing consistent with these demands. Attendance is a requirement. Work Environment Work involves exposure to various environments: loading/unloading with others, working in an enclosed vehicle or trailer, all weather conditions, noise levels from quiet to loud, and variable lighting conditions. Duties may be expanded by management as necessary. Compensation Average annual pay for P&D Drivers: $81,000. Salary range: $20.15 – $37.68 per hour.
