Job Title: Surgical First Assistant (RNFA) Profession: Nursing Specialty: Surgical Services Duration: 26 weeks Shift: First Shift Hours per Shift: 40 Experience: No experience required License: Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state Certifications: BLS, ACLS, First Assist RN Certification either CNOR or RNFA Must-Have: - ADN or ASN required - Demonstrates awareness of Surgical Services policies and AORN standards of care - Organizes, prioritizes, and implements work based on the changing needs of patients and the unit Description: The Surgical First Assistant (RN) is responsible for providing nursing care for patient populations in the operating rooms and for perioperative care in the transition from preoperative preparation through surgery and to recovery areas. The Surgical First Assistant (RN) must possess the skills necessary to assist the physician in a variety of surgical procedures. This role requires minimizing turnaround times between procedures while following established safety procedures. The RN maintains and provides accurate communication during the intraoperative and perioperative periods. The Surgical First Assistant (RN) uses the nursing process to include assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care throughout the patient’s stay in the operating room areas. This position assists surgical team members in preparing for cases and cleaning the room after procedures. It includes appropriately setting up surgical cases by providing the necessary equipment and supplies based on the procedure. The RN will be fiscally responsible for the economical utilization of resources. They perform needle and instrument counts in accordance with policy. The Surgical First Assistant (RN) re-stocks supplies in the operating rooms as needed. They are a member of the surgical team in optimizing room turnaround time. This role includes demonstrating principles and practices of aseptic techniques and knowledge of surgical pharmacology and anesthesia agent adjuncts. Additionally, the RN performs treatments and administers medications per policies and procedures. Preferred education includes a BSN and previous nursing experience as a First Assist.
