The Assistant Machine Shop Manager supports fabrication and welding operations by coordinating production activities, optimizing shop-floor resources, and maintaining high standards for safety, quality, and throughput. Reporting to the shop manager and operations manager, this role shares leadership responsibilities with the shop manager and leads the shop in the manager’s absence. The position also provides performance coaching, training, and succession planning while driving quality improvement and cost reduction initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Schedule production activities and coordinate shop-floor operations for fabrication and welding.
- Manage work orders, machine allocation, and production throughput.
- Monitor quality control processes and implement quality improvement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with safety requirements and support safety management practices.
- Monitor inventory levels and coordinate equipment maintenance activities.
- Supervise team performance and provide coaching, training, and succession planning.
- Prepare performance reports and support cost-reduction efforts.
- Lead shop operations when the shop manager is absent.
Required Qualifications
- 6+ years of experience in machine shop operations.
- Technical certificate in machining or manufacturing.
- Knowledge of CNC machining and blueprint reading.
- Experience with lean manufacturing, quality inspection, and production planning.
- Proficiency with ERP/MRP systems.
- Team leadership and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of safety management and compliance practices.
