Maintenance Technician

This training position will work under the guidance of licensed tradesmen to learn how to operate and maintain the physical school plant in all capacities to ensure district facilities are in a condition of operational excellence for all building users.

Under the guidance of licensed, skilled tradesmen, learn how to:

• Monitor, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair boilers, related heating equipment systems and building control systems.
• Perform service and troubleshooting for mechanical systems including pumps, HVAC, refrigeration and ventilation systems.
• Perform routine plumbing repairs and maintenance.
• Install, maintain and troubleshoot branch circuit systems for general purpose lighting and receptacle loads. Service/troubleshoot emergency electrical systems including fire, security, emergency lighting and other alarms. Maintain kitchen and related specialty service equipment.
• Preventative maintenance programs for above to ensure safe and proper operation of equipment.
• Performs general maintenance work inside and outside the physical plant: ceiling, roof, electrical, plumbing, concrete, masonry, glazing, insulation, tile, pump and fan repairs.

Performs grounds maintenance work as needed: plowing, salting, athletic field preparation and maintenance of underground sprinkling systems.

Maintain detailed records of work/materials used; document workload and time required to complete tasks.

Must demonstrate ability to read/interpret blueprints and operating diagrams of building and electrical systems.

Must wear district authorized uniforms and clothing.

Responsible for completion, handling and distribution of own payroll time sheet.

Participate in departmental training, education and team building programs and exercises.

Provide and perform customer-related services and assignments as requested.

Must maintain a valid home telephone number on file with maintenance department and school; respond to emergencies as required. Works with little or no supervision.

Performs additional duties that may be assigned.

Required Qualifications:

• Have good basic knowledge in HVAC, carpentry, electrical and plumbing.
• Must have a minimum of high school education or equivalent.
• A good basic knowledge of building operating systems.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to speak effectively before small groups of employees of the organization.
• High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Possess good communication and interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate and relate to other district personnel, contractors and vendors.
• Basic knowledge in HVAC, refrigeration, electrical or plumbing.
• Must demonstrate the desire to learn the operation of a preventative maintenance program for mechanical systems including scheduling, task description and documentation, troubleshooting and follow-up.
• Must demonstrate the desire to maintain, repair and replace all types of plumbing and piping equipment for hydronic heating systems, pumps, etc.
• Desire to learn the tasks to monitor, maintain, program and troubleshoot computerized energy management systems.
• Good attendance.
• Ability to work in a variety of spaces and conditions.

Other Skills and Abilities:

• Ability to pass a written and physical test.

Knowledge of building operating systems.

Ability to read/interpret blueprints and operating diagrams of building equipment and electrical systems.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.

Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of education policies.

Physical Demands:

• While performing the duties, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to feel objects, tools or controls, and talk or hear.
• Employee frequently is required to reach to operate machinery/tools.
• Employee is occasionally required to sit.
• Employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward; continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climb on ladders.
• Employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the job duties.
• Employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, occasionally up to 90 pounds.
• The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, scaffolds, cabinets.
• Specific vision abilities include close, color, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and outdoors experiencing extreme temperature fluctuations.
• The employee will work near/with mechanical equipment and live electrical equipment.
• May occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers and sprays.
• The employee must meet deadlines with severe time constraints.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, occasionally noisy.
