Job Description POSITION SUMMARY: Performs advanced neurointerventional procedures or interventional radiology patient care activities for patients of varying ages. Assists in developing and monitoring department-specific systems and coordinating activities that improve quality of patient care. Assists physicians during all invasive, neuro/vascular, and other special procedures. Provides patient care to all invasive procedure patients, including acquisition and radiographic care for diagnostic and/or treatment of anatomic and physiological disorders related to their procedure. Performs and completes data reduction of all studies. Assists with implantation of stents, coils, glue, radioactive isotopes, central lines, and biopsies. Provides didactic and clinical training of new employees and students. Patient care includes groups: adolescent (13-18 years), adult (19-64 years), geriatric (65+ years).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Procedure Assistance Collaborate with interventionalists and other healthcare professionals in performing complex interventional procedures, including aneurysm coiling, AVM embolization, carotid artery stenting, intracranial stenting, and intracranial thrombectomy. Assist physicians according to OR standards, maintain sterile field, set‑up equipment, handle & maintain equipment, inject contrast media. Provide basic and advanced life support per AHA standards under supervision or protocol: cardioversion, defibrillation, IV lines, CPR, airway support. Patient Care Deliver comprehensive care to patients undergoing procedures, ensuring comfort, safety, and well‑being. Monitor patients during procedures and respond promptly to emergent situations. Advanced Imaging Techniques Use 3‑D rotational angiography, cone‑beam CT, perfusion imaging to capture detailed brain and vessel images; interpret and assist with treatment planning. Navigation Systems Operate electromagnetic and infrared‑based navigation systems to guide catheter/device placement, ensuring accuracy and safety. Interventional Device Handling Handle microcatheters, guidewires, stents, embolic agents with precision; assist with device selection and preparation. Intraoperative Monitoring Conduct real‑time monitoring of cerebral blood flow, oxygenation, and other physiological parameters; provide critical feedback to the surgical team. Imaging Equipment Operation Operate angiography systems and other specialized devices; maintain ability to calibrate, troubleshoot, and operate biomedical electronic equipment during procedures. Image Analysis and Documentation Analyze, interpret imaging data, highlight findings, and document procedure details accurately; maintain meticulous records and compliance with regulations. Equipment Preparation and Maintenance Prepare the interventional suite and equipment; ensure functionality, cleanliness, sterilization; perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot issues. Perform preventive safety inspections, warm‑up procedures, record quality control activities; report equipment conditions to biomedical engineering or relevant personnel. Radiation Safety Implement radiation safety protocols to minimize exposure; adhere to ALARA principles during procedures. Quality Assurance Participate in quality improvement initiatives; develop and implement best practices in interventional neurology. Maintain rigorous quality assurance, safety, infection control, and sterile technique protocols. Mentoring and Training Act as mentor for less experienced neuro technologists; provide guidance, training, and support in complex procedures. Patient Education Educate patients and families about procedures, risks, and post‑procedural care instructions. Professional Development Stay updated on advances in techniques, imaging technology, and safety protocols; attend conferences, workshops, and training sessions. Research and Development Contribute to research initiatives: clinical trials, data collection, analysis; implement innovative approaches. Clinical Practice Practice standard precautions with contaminated items. Maintain unit order and efficiency. Maintain appearance of patient care areas and public areas. Adhere to all radiation safety regulations. Order and stock supplies to meet unit/department needs. Maintain inventory supplies for assigned workstation; rotate stock to eliminate outdated items. Maintain a sterile environment. Patient Care and Safety Provide basic comfort, support, and address safety needs of patients. Accept verbal/written assignments from registered technologist and seek clarification as needed. Demonstrate proper responses to emergency situations. Complete examination, consultation, billing procedures, and other paperwork as required. Greet patients, confirm identification, and perform correct procedures as directed; explain procedure to patient/family. Perform visual preventive safety inspections; record quality control activities; report equipment conditions to Quality Control/Materials Manager. Follow through on assignments to completion and communicate issues related to continuity of care.SECONDARY FUNCTIONS
Participate in all phases of clinical investigations. Maintain inventory supplies, rotate stock, eliminate outdated items; maintain record‑keeping and inventory management. Participate in on‑call responsibilities as required. Perform other duties as assigned. Transport patients.JOB REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma / GED. Vascular‑Interventional Radiography (VI) Certified or graduate of a formal radiation technologists program with RT(R) (VI certification required within two years of hire) or Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS certified).PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Two years of experience as an interventional technologist in the cath lab, interventional radiology, or interventional neurology. Prior experience in an interventional radiology or neurology setting. Familiarity with neuroimaging techniques and procedures. Proficiency in operating neuroimaging equipment, including angiography systems and digital subtraction angiography (DSA); familiarity with image analysis software. Strong understanding of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and neurovascular diseases; familiarity with interventional neurology procedures, including endovascular thrombectomy, embolization, and stenting. Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy when analyzing and documenting imaging data and procedure details. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to explain complex concepts to patients and families clearly and compassionately. Strong collaborative skills; work effectively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in a fast‑paced environment. Ability to remain calm under pressure and adapt to changing circumstances during procedures.
