JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for operating a variety of equipment to maintain county roads, right-a-ways, and drainage systems as required to maintain the infrastructure of Ware County.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Operates a track hoe to clear land and drainage ditches.
- Operates a bulldozer to redistribute dirt, prepare roads for paving, and clear rights-of-way.
- Operates a lowboy tractor trailer to transport heavy equipment to and from work sites.
- Operates an excavator to clear swamp land.
- Operates a front-end loader to load trucks and move dirt.
- Operates a backhoe to dig ditches, lay pipe, and clear drainage systems.
- May operate a gradall to dig ditches and lay galvanized pipe.
- May prepare pads for bridge drainage pipes.
- May shoot grade using a transit level.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Assists with checking parts and supplies in and out of the parts room for departmental personnel; fills out work orders.
- Picks up parts and supplies as needed.
- Drives a dump truck to transport dirt to work sites.
- Assists Motor grader Operators by clearing roads, cleaning pipes, maintaining records of work projects completed, and assisting with the maintenance of motor graders.
- Assists with the maintenance of rights-of-way by following mowers to clear roads and ditches.
- Counts dump trucks loaded with dirt as they enter the landfill.
- Maintains daily records of work performed.
- Performs other road and drainage system maintenance tasks as needed, including flagging traffic, installing signs and pipes, repairing potholes, clearing beaver dams, and removing tree limbs.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
- Knowledge of county policies and procedures pertaining to road and drainage system maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of techniques for achieving grade, drainage, and proper compaction.
- Knowledge of road construction and maintenance techniques.
- Knowledge of departmental and safety rules and regulations.
- Skill in operating such heavy equipment as a track-hoe, bulldozer, lowboy tractor trailer, excavator, front-end loader, backhoe, and gradall.
- Skill in dealing with the public.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Road Superintendent may assign work in terms of general instructions. The work is spot-checked in progress and upon completion for compliance with instructions, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include state DOT road maintenance and traffic guidelines, county and safety policies and procedures, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are clear and specific, but require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties in maintaining county roads and rights-of-way. Inclement weather, material obstructions, soil conditions, equipment failures, and traffic contribute to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment to improve and maintain county roads and rights-of-way. Successful performance helps ensure safe and serviceable county roads and drainage systems.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers and the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is performed with the employee sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee must lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, and use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles or gloves.SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
$1,200 - $1,400 per week
