Education Services Specialist

The primary purpose of this position is to evaluate cadet candidate files and make recommendations for admission to the Air Force Academy, the Falcon Foundation, and the Air Force Academy Preparatory School. Assists in all aspects of the selection process from counseling candidates to assisting supervisors prepare for selections panels and the Academy Board. In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions, to include the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for the GS-1740, Education Services Series. Basic Requirement for GS-1740 Positions: A Bachelor's degree (or higher degree that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours appropriate to the position to be filled in one or a combination of the areas described below. At least one course must have been from (1) or (2) below. (For guidance counselor positions, a college or university-sponsored practicum in counseling is also required): Tests and measurement Adult education Educational program administration Curriculum development or design Teaching methods (Study of adult learner) Guidance and counseling Career planning Occupational information NOTE: You MUST submit copies of your transcripts. AND In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience for GS-1740-09 which includes knowledge of DoD, AF, and major command directives, concepts, procedures, guidance, and policy as they relate to the area of responsibility. Knowledge of education theories, principles, and techniques, and the ability to use those techniques to gather educational and personal information in order to advise individuals regarding educational and vocational needs/opportunities. Knowledge of military and civilian occupations and occupational trends and the physical, mental, educational, and experiential requirements of various occupations applied with a knowledge of educational institutions and programs to make appropriate recommendations. OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-07 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-09 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Extensive knowledge of the Academy's course of instruction to include the academic curriculum, military training programs, and physical education requirements. 2. Extensive knowledge of the high school curriculum to include college preparatory curriculum, the Advanced Placement program and the International Baccalaureate program and knowledge of college curriculum, and grading practices. 3. Skill and ability to evaluate prior academic records and physical qualifications to determine a candidate's ability to succeed academically and physically at the Air Force Academy. This includes analyzing high school transcripts, college transcripts, physical fitness tests, medical qualifications and extracurricular activities. 4. Knowledge of best practices in college admissions to include diversity recruitment and selection and the ability to provide guidance and counseling to prospective candidates and general admissions policies to the public at large. 5. Ability to apply best practices in college admissions to the selection of candidates. Knowledge of computer applications and skill in using office automation devices. 6. Administrative skills to include the processing of a large volume of forms and data as well as complex systems to manage information flow.
