Registered Nurse Emergency Department

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department (ED RN) provides comprehensive nursing care to adult and pediatric patients in a high-volume, acute care, Level I trauma center. This role requires expertise in emergency nursing, including cardiac monitoring, IV therapy, medication administration, neurological, orthopedic, pediatric, psychiatric, and respiratory care. The nurse collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to ensure timely and effective patient management in a fast-paced environment, adhering to established protocols and standards. Responsibilities:

• Perform cardiac monitoring including interpretation and management of dysrhythmias and multisystem organ dysfunction.
• Obtain and interpret 12 lead EKGs.
• Administer blood products, start IVs, perform phlebotomy, and manage continuous IV sedation, emergency medications, IV vasopressors, and procedural sedation.
• Manage neurological cases such as CVA, spinal cord injury, and traumatic brain injury.
• Apply and manage orthopedic splints.
• Provide pediatric emergency care including assessment and treatment of abdominal pain, asthma, head injury, infections, poison ingestion, seizures, skin disorders, and abuse identification.
• Manage psychiatric emergencies including acute psychosis, drug overdose, violent behavior, and suicidal patients.
• Perform respiratory interventions including chest tube insertion/management and intubation.
• Implement isolation precautions and triage patients effectively.
• Utilize Cerner electronic health record system for documentation and communication.
• Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to coordinate patient care and ensure quality outcomes.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Minimum 2 years of emergency nursing experience.
• Active Registered Nurse license in Illinois or application in process with ETA.
• Certifications: ACLS, BLS, PALS, and TNCC.
• Proficiency in cardiac monitoring, IV therapy, emergency medication administration, and emergency response skills.
• Experience with Cerner electronic health record system.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Previous experience in a Level I trauma center or Magnet hospital environment.
• Additional certifications or training related to emergency nursing specialties.
• Experience managing a broad spectrum of emergency cases across adult and pediatric populations.

Special Considerations:

• Work is performed in a combined adult/pediatric emergency department.
• No on-call requirement.
• Must have cardiac monitoring and emergency response skills including dysrhythmia management and procedural sedation.
• Adherence to isolation precautions and triage protocols is essential.
• Parking permit required but provided at no cost.
• Floating outside scope is not expected.
• Shift cancellation policy includes potential non-payment for up to 36 hours per thirteen-week assignment.

Scheduling:

• 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (1900-0730).
• Work every other weekend.
• Block schedule requests can be discussed with the manager.
• Return to office (RTO) restrictions ideally no more than 5 days.
