CLINICAL LECTURER

University of Michigan

Responsibilities* The University of Michigan Department of Urology invites applications for a one-year clinical advance training in Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery. This position is offered through the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons (GURS) match in the United States & Canada training track. The advanced training prepares the urologist for an academic or high-volume clinical career in adult genitourinary reconstruction through hands-on operative training, structured mentorship, and a dedicated research and scholarly experience. The fellow will function as an active operating surgeon-not an observer-progressing to graduated autonomy across the full breadth of open, endoscopic, minimally invasive, and robotic reconstructive urology under the direct mentorship of fellowship faculty. The advanced trainee will develop comprehensive expertise across the core domains of adult genitourinary reconstruction, including: Urethral reconstruction, including anterior and posterior urethroplasty, complex and redo repairs, and management of urethral stricture disease Penile reconstruction and prosthetics, including penile implant surgery, Peyronie's disease correction, and penile and genital skin coverage Surgery for urinary incontinence, including artificial urinary sphincter placement, male slings, and revision procedures Genitourinary fistula repair, including vesicovaginal, rectourethral, and complex acquired fistulae Reconstruction of the upper and lower urinary tract, including ureteral reconstruction, bladder augmentation, urinary diversion, and neurogenic bladder management Genitourinary trauma and its acute and delayed reconstructive management Management of complications of prior pelvic surgery, radiation, and oncologic treatment Operative volume, case distribution, and category thresholds meet or exceed GURS verification standards, and a de-identified GURS-format surgical case log is maintained for every advanced trainee. Clinical training is complemented by structured outpatient continuity, multidisciplinary conferences, and progressive responsibility in perioperative decision-making. Scholarly productivity is a central expectation of the advanced trainee. Consistent with GURS re-verification criteria, the fellow is expected to complete and disseminate at least one original research project during the training year, culminating in a peer-reviewed manuscript and/or a presentation or accepted abstract at a national or international meeting (e.g., AUA, an AUA Section meeting, SIU, or EAU). Faculty provide mentorship in study design, data analysis, and academic writing. The advanced trainee is also expected to apply for GURS membership during or upon completion of the program. Required Qualifications* Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), or equivalent degree Successful completion of an accredited urology residency program prior to the fellowship start date Board eligibility or board certification in urology (or the applicable national equivalent) Eligibility for a medical license in the State of Michigan Demonstrated interest in and commitment to a career in genitourinary reconstructive surgery Strong interpersonal, communication, and teaching skills, and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team A record of, or clear aptitude for, academic scholarship and research Modes of Work Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes .
