Director of National Referral Development

Metro Vein Centers is a rapidly growing healthcare practice specializing in state-of-the-art vein treatments. We are looking for a Director of National Referral Development to build and lead a new department dedicated to growing our physician referral channel. MVC has scaled to where we are today through differentiated direct-to-patient marketing. Physician referrals are the next major axis of growth, and we want this channel built properly from day one. This department is a strategic priority for the CEO and reports to the VP of Business Development with direct exposure to executive leadership and the board. This is a build role inside a department that does not yet exist. We are not looking for someone to recreate the conventional physician liaison playbook. We are looking for a strategic operator who has opinions about how that model can be improved, the ability to design a better one, and the discipline to actually build it from an initial team of five liaisons to 50+ across our national footprint over the next several years. What You'll Do Build the Function Establish the initial organization structure, including inside versus outside sales mix, territory model, and segmentation logic, with a clear thesis on how it should evolve as the team scales. Design the initial compensation model, including base, variable, accelerators, and SPIFFs. Lead the cross-functional work to design and implement the referral attribution model, including how referral-influenced patients are identified, credited against the channel, and reconciled with direct-to-patient marketing attribution. Evaluate where technology and automation can advance department goals, including CRM workflows, AI-assisted tools, sequencing and cadence automation, reporting infrastructure, and territory analytics. Establish the referring physician engagement approach, including initial segmentation of target referrers (PCPs, OBGYNs, podiatry, wound care, and others), the value proposition for each segment, and the cadence and content of ongoing engagement. Build the foundational department assets, including a working version of the MVC referral playbook, training curriculum, ramp expectations, and the compliance program covering AKS, Stark, HIPAA, and state marketing rules. Hire and ramp the first five liaisons, then refine the playbook and strategy based on what this teaches you. Lead the Function Set the operating cadence, including weekly business reviews, ride-alongs, quarterly business reviews, and annual planning. Build the channel KPIs, including P&L, referral volume, CAC, and LTV, and present them monthly to executive leadership. Design and operationalize the feedback loop to referring physicians, including referral receipt confirmation, consult and treatment status updates, outcome reporting back to the referring office, and the standards that govern each touchpoint. Build the internal partnership with MVC physicians and clinic teams. Define how liaisons interface with physicians and generate participation in referrer outreach and education, and how to support a differentiated experience for referred patients from intake through follow-up. Build the cross-functional operating model with Operations, Patient Intake, and Marketing to establish the shared priorities, hand-offs, and feedback loops that turn the referral channel into a coordinated effort across departments. Serve as MVC's senior external face to potential referring health systems, specialty societies, and large group practices in priority markets. Scale the team to 50+ liaisons across our national footprint as we grow to 150+ clinics over the next three years, deepening the manager bench and maturing the operating model as the team grows. Who You Are 10+ years in healthcare commercial leadership across physician liaison, medical device, specialty pharma, ambulatory services, or multi-site provider organizations. A builder. You have built or rebuilt a sales organization and can speak specifically to what you inherited, what you changed, and what you put in its place. You do not view the conventional physician liaison model as fixed. Fluent in HubSpot or an equivalent CRM, the supporting technology around it, attribution methodology, and compensation design. Experienced owning a channel P&L, including referral volume, CAC, and LTV, at meaningful scale. Comfortable presenting performance and ROI to executive leadership and the board. Operate effectively in a regulated environment, with working knowledge of AKS, Stark, HIPAA, and state marketing rules. Track record of developing leaders and managing large teams. You can point to specific people you have promoted and where they are today. A servant leader who rolls up your sleeves and is equally effective in the boardroom and in the field. Prior experience in venture- or private equity-backed healthcare growth environments preferred.
