Medical Director Hernia Center

The Department of Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville, is seeking a general surgeon at the non‑tenure accruing level of Clinical Assistant, Associate, or Professor. The department is a tertiary referral center serving the population of Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia and is home to the divisions of Gastrointestinal Surgery/​Surgical Oncology, Otolaryngology, Plastic Surgery, and Trauma/​Acute Care/​Critical Care. With a mission to be the region’s most valued surgical health care asset, the department is poised for significant growth as it expands elective surgical practice throughout the Northeast region.

The Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery/​Surgical Oncology currently boasts eleven faculty members across subspecialties including breast surgery, colon and rectal surgery, hepatopancreaticobiliary, surgical oncology, and minimally invasive surgery.

We are seeking a candidate with advanced training in hernias and abdominal wall reconstruction to serve as Medical Director of the Hernia and Abdominal Wall Health Program. The candidate must be an MD or DO, Board‑Certified or Board‑Eligible in General Surgery, and have experience in all aspects of the evaluation and treatment of hernias, including minimally invasive approaches such as robotic and laparoscopic surgery. Major responsibilities include building a comprehensive hernia center and elective general surgery practice, and providing education to medical students and residents. The candidate will join a diverse academic general surgery practice, contributing to an expanding GI/MIS and robotic program. This position will report to the Chief of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Surgical Oncology and to the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville. All faculty members receive a mentoring team and participate in a department‑wide faculty development program.

No trauma calls are required; however, an Emergency General Surgery call at a community hospital is required and is split among division faculty.

Responsibilities

• Provide and maintain a high level of quality of patient care services in all aspects of General Surgery and Minimally Invasive Surgery
• Provide clinical teaching of trainees in General Surgery and actively participate in the educational program
• Be responsible for excellent communication with primary care physicians, consulting services, and other referring providers
• Assist in marketing the General Surgery Programs to community physicians and managed care organizations
• Participate in monthly division and department meetings, administrative functions, and institutional committees as requested
