Lead Construction Organizer

Based in Minneapolis, MN

Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en Lucha (CTUL) is a worker-led organization where workers organize, educate, and empower each other to fight for a voice in their workplaces and in their communities. We partner with other organizations and leaders to build a movement to win racial, gender, and economic justice. We identify the root causes of injustice and work to shift the balance of power between those who have it and those who don’t to improve the lives of our communities for present and future generations. Position Description
This managerial position will focus on developing an organizing team that builds a base of workers and leads mini-campaigns with those who experience wage theft and other forms of exploitation, as part of a larger strategic campaign. This position also coordinates closely with the point people on the SPARC (Strategy, Policy, Allies, Research, Communications) team and helps develop coalition strategy to shape strategic priorities for base building.

Supervision of Unionized Staff: The Lead will supervise and manage a team of three organizers employees who are covered under a union contract, ensuring compliance with collective bargaining agreements and fostering effective labor relations.

Primary Responsibilities but not limited to: 
Organizing

  • Coordinating and supporting outreach in order to find new workers at work and at their homes
  • Set up 1-1 meetings with workers identified at work, and through other contacts
  • Motivate and agitate workers to fight, develop worker leadership and to take ownership of the campaign fight
  • Be persistent support organizing team for the outcome of successfully obtaining commitments from workers
  • Get workers to take action including work stoppages/strikes, telling their stories and becoming spokespersons of the campaign and CTUL, sharing public testimony and bringing worker voice to the fight.
  • Build CTUL’s membership and collect membership contributions

Team Leadership

  • Ability to identify new opportunities for campaign strategies and become a strategist within the organization
  • Develop and implement training agendas
  • Initiate new projects that you will work with your lead to coordinate
  • Submit regular reports on progress toward team's goals
  • Develop the leadership and supervise organizing staff
  • Use existing structures and create new ones when necessary to identify progress and set achievable goals
  • Lead regular team meetings to evaluate, offer and receive feedback and improve work
  • Communicate and support high expectations of organizing from organizers, hold team and individuals accountable
  • Work with team to develop meeting agendas and facilitate meetings to engage construction workers
  • Work with members, organizers, and others in the organization to develop knowledge, tools, and campaign strategy
  • Take a leadership role in carrying out campaign strategy, including but not limited to: developing relationships with organizational partners and allies, communicating with bosses, and leading direct actions
  • Communicate organizational priorities and needs to construction organizing team
  • Develop relationships with staff in other partner organizations to coordinate work and participate in organizing strong alliances
  • Build relationships through 1-1 meetings with other staff
  • Set team and individual goals, create and support organizers leadership within the campaign and organizing work. 
  • Ensure strong data practice and follow through on all organizational expectations of yourself and the team

General support

  • Perform tasks as part of the team that develop leadership with all workers in CTUL’s base
  • Support other organizers when necessary for organizational goals
  • Be part of raising money to support the organization
  • Support communication by providing occasional, informal interpretation during staff meetings and internal meetings when needed. 
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support organizational goals and operational needs. 

Qualifications

  • Commitment to CTUL’s mission and vision
  • Consistent communication with team about work expectations
  • Minimum three years’ experience organizing in BIPOC communities
  • Past supervisory experience
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English and Spanish
  • Excellent relationship building and communications skills
  • Ability to push workers and organizers outside of their comfort zones
  • Consistency and accountability in completing goals and expectations
  • Comfortable in taking initiative to solve problems and able to be self-directed in day-to-day work 
  • Proficiency in Google Suite tools
  • Have a driver’s license, access to a car, and are comfortable driving

Salary and Benefits
CTUL has a tiered salary range set by the Staff and Board based on the principles of economic justice and inclusion. This salaried position is currently compensated at $77,250 per year. This full-time position will normally work 80 hours per pay period, including some work on evenings and weekends. Benefits include: 3 weeks paid vacation, sick days, 5 recuperation days, 19 paid holidays, 90% employer-paid medical and dental insurance for you and your immediate family, 100% employer-paid vision and life insurance, a monthly phone stipend, and an annual end of year bonus of 5% of your annual salary which can be used towards a retirement fund.

Descripción del puesto

Organizar

  • Programar reuniones individuales con los trabajadores identificados en el trabajo y a través de otros contactos.
  • Motivar e incitar a los trabajadores a luchar, desarrollar el liderazgo obrero y a asumir la responsabilidad de la campaña.
  • Sea persistente y apoye al equipo organizador para lograr el éxito en la obtención de compromisos de los trabajadores.
  • Hay que animar a los trabajadores a tomar medidas, como paros laborales o huelgas, a contar sus historias y a convertirse en portavoces de la campaña y de CTUL, a compartir testimonios públicos y a hacer oír la voz de los trabajadores en la lucha.
  • Aumentar la membresía de CTUL y recaudar las cuotas de membresía.

Liderazgo de equipo

  • Capacidad para identificar nuevas oportunidades para estrategias de campaña y convertirse en estratega dentro de la organización.
  • Desarrollar e implementar programas de capacitación.

  • Comunicar y respaldar las altas expectativas de organización que se esperan de los organizadores, responsabilizar al equipo y a los individuos.

  • Asuma un rol de liderazgo en la ejecución de la estrategia de campaña, lo que incluye, entre otras cosas: desarrollar relaciones con socios y aliados de la organización, comunicarse con los superiores y liderar acciones directas.
  • Comunicar las prioridades y necesidades de la organización al equipo organizador de la construcción.
  • Desarrollar relaciones con el personal de otras organizaciones asociadas para coordinar el trabajo y participar en la organización de alianzas sólidas.
  • Fomente las relaciones mediante reuniones individuales con otros miembros del personal.
  • Establecer objetivos individuales y de equipo, crear y apoyar el liderazgo de los organizadores dentro de la campaña y el trabajo de organización.
  • Asegúrese de mantener buenas prácticas de gestión de datos y de cumplir con todas las expectativas de la organización, tanto para usted como para el equipo.

Requisitos

  • Compromiso con la misión y la visión de CTUL.

  • Experiencia mínima de tres años organizando en comunidades BIPOC.
  • Experiencia previa en supervisión
  • Dominio del inglés y del español hablado y escrito.
  • Excelentes habilidades para establecer relaciones y comunicarse.
  • Capacidad para sacar a los trabajadores y organizadores de sus zonas de confort.
  • Coherencia y responsabilidad en el cumplimiento de objetivos y expectativas.

Salario y beneficios
CTUL cuenta con una escala salarial escalonada establecida por el personal y la junta directiva, basada en los principios de justicia económica e inclusión. Este puesto asalariado tiene actualmente una remuneración de $77,250 anuales. Este puesto de tiempo completo normalmente requiere 80 horas por período de pago, incluyendo trabajo ocasional por las noches y los fines de semana. Los beneficios incluyen: 3 semanas de vacaciones pagadas, días de enfermedad, 5 días de recuperación, 19 días festivos pagados, seguro médico y dental con cobertura del empleador del 90% para usted y su familia directa, seguro de visión y de vida con cobertura del empleador del 100%, un subsidio mensual para teléfono y una bonificación anual de fin de año del 5% de su salario anual, que puede utilizarse para un fondo de jubilación.
