Industrial Chiller Service Technician Position Summary We are seeking a skilled, safety-focused Service Technician to install, commission, maintain, diagnose, and repair industrial glycol and refrigeration chillers at customer locations. This position serves as a technical representative of the company and is responsible for restoring equipment performance, resolving customer concerns, and documenting service work accurately. The ideal candidate combines strong refrigeration, electrical, mechanical, and controls knowledge with sound judgment, professional communication, and the ability to work independently in the field. Key Responsibilities Travel to customer facilities to install, start up, commission, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair industrial chillers and refrigeration equipment. Review service requests, equipment history, drawings, wiring diagrams, piping diagrams, control sequences, manuals, and engineering specifications before and during service work. Perform systematic troubleshooting of refrigeration, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and controls-related problems. Measure and evaluate temperatures, pressures, voltage, amperage, resistance, flow, superheat, subcooling, and other operating conditions. Diagnose problems involving compressors, pumps, fans, heat exchangers, expansion devices, valves, sensors, heaters, motors, relays, contactors, and safety controls. Perform pressure testing, leak detection, refrigerant recovery, evacuation, charging, and system performance verification using approved procedures. Complete preventive maintenance, warranty repairs, equipment modifications, component replacements, and field corrective actions. Navigate, configure, and troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, programmable controllers, variable-frequency drives, and communication systems as authorized. Verify alarms, safeties, setpoints, control logic, sequencing, and overall equipment operation before returning equipment to service. Provide remote technical support to customers and internal teams by phone, email, video, or other approved methods when assigned. Explain equipment conditions, findings, required repairs, operating practices, and recommended next steps clearly to customers. Train customer personnel on safe equipment operation, routine inspections, basic maintenance, and alarm response when requested. Coordinate with Engineering, Production, Quality, Parts, Sales, and Service leadership to resolve technical issues and obtain needed support. Identify required replacement parts and communicate accurate part descriptions, quantities, and urgency. Complete detailed service reports, commissioning records, refrigerant logs, time entries, expense reports, and customer signoffs promptly. Document equipment condition, root cause, corrective action, operating data, unresolved risks, and recommended follow-up work. Maintain company tools, instruments, service equipment, replacement parts, and assigned vehicle in a clean and serviceable condition. Follow customer site rules and represent the company with professionalism, integrity, and respect. Provide feedback on recurring failures, product improvements, serviceability, documentation, and training needs. Support factory testing, training, or production activities when field assignments permit. Participate in scheduled on-call, after-hours, weekend, or emergency service coverage when required. Perform other related duties as assigned. Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude with experience troubleshooting equipment or systems. Working knowledge of common hand tools, power tools, multimeters, gauges, vacuum pumps, refrigerant scales, and electronic leak detectors. Ability to read electrical schematics, refrigeration piping diagrams, technical manuals, and written service procedures. Ability to perform basic electrical and refrigeration calculations and interpret operating data. Ability to diagnose problems using a logical, safe, and step-by-step process. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical issues to customers. Ability to work independently, manage time, make field decisions within established authority, and request support when needed. Basic computer skills and ability to complete digital reports, email communication, timekeeping, and service documentation. Willingness and ability to travel, including overnight travel, according to business and customer needs. Ability to work flexible hours and participate in after-hours service coverage when required. Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record consistent with company requirements. Reliable attendance, professional conduct, and a strong safety mindset. Preferred Qualifications Previous commercial or industrial HVAC, refrigeration, chiller, field-service, commissioning, or industrial-maintenance experience. EPA Section 608 Universal Certification or the ability to obtain certification within an established timeframe. Experience recovering, evacuating, charging, and documenting refrigerants in accordance with applicable requirements. Strong understanding of refrigeration principles, including pressure-temperature relationships, superheat, subcooling, heat transfer, and system capacity. Experience servicing compressors, pumps, heat exchangers, expansion valves, solenoid valves, pressure controls, and temperature sensors. Knowledge of three-phase power, control voltage, motors, contactors, relays, transformers, circuit protection, and variable-frequency drives. Experience using multimeters, clamp meters, megohmmeters, micron gauges, refrigerant scales, data loggers, and electronic leak detectors. Experience navigating, programming, configuring, or troubleshooting PLCs, HMIs, programmable controllers, or building-management communication systems. Experience with glycol systems, process cooling, custom-engineered equipment, or large industrial chillers. OSHA, NFPA 70E, lockout/tagout, fall-protection, lift, rigging, or other relevant safety training. Technical degree, HVAC or refrigeration apprenticeship, military technical training, or equivalent hands-on experience. Travel and Customer Service Expectations Travel by vehicle and commercial airline to customer locations as required. Work at customer facilities that may include industrial plants, rooftops, mechanical rooms, construction sites, and outdoor environments. Maintain professional appearance, conduct, communication, and confidentiality while representing the company. Provide clear status updates to customers and internal stakeholders throughout each service assignment. Respect customer operations, property, safety requirements, security rules, and site-specific procedures. Manage assigned travel, tools, parts, receipts, and expenses responsibly. Remain calm and solutions-focused when responding to urgent equipment issues or dissatisfied customers. Safety Expectations Follow all company safety policies, customer site requirements, and applicable regulatory standards. Use required personal protective equipment and complete pre-task hazard assessments. Follow lockout/tagout, electrical safe-work, fall-protection, confined-space, hot-work, and refrigerant-handling procedures as applicable. Verify equipment is in a safe condition before energizing, pressurizing, opening, or servicing it. Use appropriate test instruments and confirm their condition and rating before use. Never bypass a safety device or approved procedure without proper authorization and documented controls. Immediately report injuries, unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, refrigerant releases, spills, and near misses. Stop work and request assistance when conditions are unsafe or outside the technician's training or authorization. Physical Requirements Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, and work around large industrial equipment for extended periods. Ability to work from ladders, rooftops, elevated platforms, and other approved access equipment when required. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation. Ability to work in confined or restricted equipment spaces where permitted and properly trained. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures, weather, noise, and industrial conditions. Ability to travel for extended periods and safely operate a motor vehicle.
