Security Data Science Specialist

Job Title Security Data Science Specialist Overview This position is within MTA HQ's Office of Security. The successful candidate will collect, validate, and analyze highly sensitive police and security data from all MTA Police and Security operating departments. The role focuses on data gathering, transformation, synchronization, and modeling to support a comprehensive, risk‑based approach to security operations. Responsibilities include advanced data analysis, report preparation, and development of actionable, data‑driven strategies aligned with global, regional, and local security initiatives. Responsibilities Write code that combines and transforms datasets to meet specific Security & Police needs. Design and implement quality controls to ensure output data is valid, accurate, and user‑friendly. Coordinate with internal and external data leads to address data quality problems and enhance legacy datasets. Develop reports and dashboards in Excel, Power BI, Report Builder, ArcGIS, automated emails, and other formats to share analyses with stakeholders. Lead data team projects and recurring tasks such as monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on confidential and sensitive open‑source, police, intelligence, and security information sources. Record and track MTA security incident data to identify trends and patterns, and suggest methods to improve data integrity and collection processes. Collaborate with stakeholders and leadership to understand reporting needs, design outputs, and produce final design and workflows. Outline project requirements as action plans for junior team members and document processes for continuity. Provide support and instruction to analysts and consultant staff in business knowledge and coding practices. Keep skills current by learning new algorithms, programming languages, and techniques. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Proficiency in data management, statistics, quantitative and qualitative analysis, empirical research methods, and analytical problem solving; ability to stay current with technical innovations. Experience developing and analyzing algorithms, dashboards, and predictive models to support security or policing functions. Proven ability to manage team‑based projects, documenting processes and quality checks. Strong database design and management skills with reading and interpreting code. Proficiency with data processing, statistical software, Microsoft Office Suite, advanced Excel, and business intelligence tools such as Power BI or Tableau. Experience supervising staff performing analytical duties. Familiarity with transportation systems and planning theory, particularly the MTA subway, bus, and railroad networks. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Security, Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Management, Statistics, Data Science, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum 3 years of professional experience in data, information, and analysis, statistical research, or related roles, including developing recommendations and preparing reports. Minimum 3 years of experience building datasets, automating tasks through scripts, writing database queries, and debugging/maintaining code. Minimum 4 years of experience with Python and SQL programming. Minimum 3 years of experience with relational databases (e.g., Oracle, Postgres, SQL Server) and writing queries in PL/SQL or equivalent. A valid driver’s license is required. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in a related field or a Master’s degree that can account for one year of experience. Experience meeting report filing deadlines for executive‑level analysis reports and strategic recommendations. Knowledge of project management principles and predictive analytics application. Understanding of federal, state, and NYC security and penal regulations and laws. Familiarity with MTA policies, procedures, and collective bargaining. Experience with data exploration and visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, and Web Focus. Experience with GIS mapping or equivalent geospatial applications. Other Information May need to work outside normal hours, including evenings and weekends. Travel may be required to other MTA locations or external sites.
