• Shift / Schedule: Day Shift, 3×12 Hours, 6:45 AM – 7:15 PM

Job Summary

This is a PCU/Stepdown travel nursing position at a medical center in Winston Salem, NC. The unit runs more like an ICU, with strong drip experience required. The unit accepts contract assignments of 13 weeks, with 36 or 48 hours available. Target nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:3–4. The unit operates with 18 patients across 20 beds as an ICU stepdown, caring for post rapid response team patients and a wide range of acuity levels. Only one pressor drip per patient is permitted on the unit; patients requiring more are transferred to the ICU.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide care to a diverse patient population including adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
• Manage patients presenting with respiratory distress, unstable hemodynamics, withdrawal, GI bleeds, and post-operative diagnoses including GYN, GU, GI, thoracotomies, neuro, and ortho surgeries.
• Provide pre/post OB care with complications, including Pitocin management.
• Monitor patients using bedside telemetry monitors with remote backup; recognize and treat dysrhythmias.
• Manage arterial lines, BIPAP, chest tubes, and tracheostomies (no vents on unit).
• Administer vasoactive and specialty drips including Cardizem, Nitro, Precedex, Cardene, Levophed, Dopamine, Dobutamine, and Neo drips.
• Utilize Pyxis and Epic systems for medication dispensing and documentation.
• Float as needed to the sister unit, which is an ICCU.
• Work every other weekend as required by unit scheduling.
• Adhere to schedule created by Nurse Manager; no block scheduling permitted.
• Wear Navy, White, or a combination of the two for scrubs.

Required Experience

• Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
• First-time travelers accepted
• Local candidates accepted

Education Requirements

• ACLS certification required
• BCLS certification required
• NIH Stroke Scale certification required
• Must pass EKG Testing prior to start for this specialty

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

• High-acuity stepdown/PCU unit that runs more like an ICU
• No ventilators on unit; patients requiring more than one pressor drip are transferred to the ICU
• Floating required as needed to sister unit (ICCU)
• Every other weekend requirement
• 12-hour day shifts
• 36 or 48 hours per week available
• Hospital orientation in week one; traveler must be available for classes each day
• Flu vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions only)

Important Notes

• RTO (Return to Origin) after booking is NOT allowed and is NOT allowed to be worked out onsite. Any call-offs or additional RTO on unit could result in contract cancellation and DNR (Do Not Rehire).
• No block scheduling permitted under any circumstances.
• Must pass EKG Testing prior to start for this specialty.
• Traveler must be available for hospital orientation classes each day during week one.
• Maximum 7 days RTO for Aya Auto Offer assignments.
