Job Description
The Phlebotomist II supports a high-volume clinical or laboratory setting by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and processing, and maintaining strict adherence to safety and regulatory standards. This role assists with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement, while delivering courteous, professional service to patients and clinical staff.
Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment.
• Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
• Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients of all age groups, helping them feel informed and at ease.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all patient and test information is complete and accurate.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, maintaining specimen integrity throughout the process.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
• Package specimens for transport and follow protocol-specific procedures to maintain appropriate temperature and handling conditions.
• Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
• Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders to ensure proper specimen collection and processing.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and infection control standards.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support a safe and compliant laboratory environment.
• Update and verify patient information in the appropriate systems, ensuring accurate and timely data entry.
• Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information as appropriate, delivering professional and courteous customer service.
• Assist in troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, labeling, or processing and recommend workflow improvements.
• Support training of colleagues by demonstrating proper phlebotomy and specimen handling techniques as needed.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience performing venipunctures and blood draws, including use of straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Minimum of 2+ years of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• Demonstrated ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
• Ability to read, understand, and accurately follow physicians' orders and laboratory requisitions.
• Strong attention to detail when matching requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying patient and test information.
• Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to following all safety and infection control procedures.
• Experience working with patients across all age groups, including pediatric blood drawing skills.
• Effective customer service skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and clinical staff.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
• High school diploma or GED.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required by state regulations.
• Experience in specimen processing within a clinical laboratory environment.
• Familiarity with handling and processing multiple specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.
• Comfort working in a high-volume, time-sensitive setting while maintaining accuracy and quality.
• Ability to answer telephone inquiries and communicate laboratory results or information in a professional manner.
• 0-2 years of additional related experience beyond the minimum requirements is welcomed.

Work Environment
This position operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting that handles a high volume of patient specimens. The role involves frequent interaction with patients of all ages, as well as collaboration with clinical and laboratory staff. You will regularly use phlebotomy equipment such as straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, specimen tubes, and collection containers, along with computer systems and the Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and communication. Work typically requires standing for extended periods, moving between patient areas and the laboratory, and managing multiple tasks under time-sensitive conditions while adhering strictly to OSHA and DEP regulations and all safety and infection control procedures.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Toms River, NJ.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $26.00/hr.
