Assistant Director, Human Resources Communications

Job Information Job No: 557252 Work Type: Management (MPP) Location: Chancellor's Office, Long Beach, CA Categories: MPP, Administrative, At-Will, Full Time Role Overview The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking an Assistant Director, Human Resources Communications to oversee the planning and implementation of communications to CSU employees through an intranet/digital communications platform, creative campaigns, and informational presentations and documents. This role works within the Integrated Internal Communications team and collaborates closely with Systemwide Human Resources, Chancellor’s Office Human Resources, Labor Relations, Collective Bargaining, Title IX/Civil Rights, and other cross‑functional stakeholders across the CSU system. Responsibilities Manage and execute a comprehensive integrated communications strategy for the Division of Human Resources, identifying audiences, determining communication mediums, and setting frequency for optimal internal and external communication. Provide strategic and creative guidance to HR leadership and functional teams to align divisional efforts with HR goals and the CSU mission. Serve as lead HR contact for the new CSU Connect/Workvivo intranet site. Develop and distribute communications that explain or convey CSU policies or positions on issues to internal audiences through written communications and email/online/social media/intranet platforms. Partner with leadership and functional teams, including Labor Relations, Collective Bargaining, and Title IX/Civil Rights, on content and messaging. Write, create, and edit content; conceive, design, and produce SWHR emails, web content, and messaging; oversee the development of brochures, flyers, posters, and photography to promote internal communications initiatives. Manage the use of social, electronic media, and virtual event platforms for delivering integrated messages on HR‑related communications to reach broad audiences. Foster partnerships and collaboration throughout SWHR and the Chancellor’s Office to achieve effective employer communications. Serve as the HR division’s primary liaison with CO Marketing Communications and Public Affairs on initiatives and project management. Oversee the work of the Editorial Content Manager in producing the Chancellor’s Office internal newsletter. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field. Minimum five years of related experience. Significant communications management experience with a proven track record. Fluency with the Microsoft Office suite. Familiarity with employee intranet platforms. Strong writing, editing, research, and proofreading skills, including the ability to present concepts verbally. Leadership skills for directing and overseeing projects. Excellent organizational and planning skills; capacity to adapt to changing information and needs, coordinate multiple assignments, establish priorities, and meet deadlines. Capacity to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork in a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere with a diverse population. Ability to translate complex technical information into common ordinary terms. Confident communicator and presenter. Strong knowledge of current trends in digital media/social media. Self‑motivated with a positive and professional approach to management. Experience and knowledge of change management principles and methodologies. Experience with large‑scale organizational change efforts. Effectiveness at all levels in an organization. Problem‑solving and root cause identification skills. Strong analytic and decision‑making abilities. Ability to influence others and move toward a common vision or goal. Knowledge of and/or experience in Human Resources Management (preferred). Additional Requirements Background check, including criminal records, required prior to assuming the position. Enrollment in the E-Verify program administered by DHS/SSA; legal authorization to work in the United States required. Mandated Reporter status per the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act; compliance with CSU Executive Order 1083. Conflict of Interest: file Conflict of Interest Form 700 upon appointment and annually thereafter, complete ethics training within six months of appointment and every other year thereafter.
