Maintenance Worker - High School

Job Title: Maintenance Worker - High School FLSA: Nonexempt

Primary Purpose: The High School Maintenance Worker performs general maintenance and repair of building structures and their mechanical, electrical, and sanitary systems at assigned high schools and assists with the maintenance of grounds.

Qualifications

• High school diploma from an accredited high school or GED
• Trade experience is required
• Valid Texas Driver's License
• Eligible for coverage under the district's vehicle insurance program

Special Knowledge/Skills

• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language
• General knowledge of computers
• Knowledge of basic construction and routine maintenance and repair procedures
• General knowledge of other crafts used in building repair and maintenance
• Ability to use hand and power tools
• Ability to follow written and verbal instruction
• Ability to read blueprints and diagrams
• Ability to measure and perform mathematical calculations
• Ability to physically lift 100 pounds
• Ability to work independently
• Knowledge of state and local building codes
• Ability to direct and supervise personnel
• Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Maintenance and Repair

• Perform repairs and maintenance at the assigned high school, including:
• Repairing woodwork
• Replacing electrical switches, ballasts, emergency packs, fixtures, and motors
• Mixing paint and painting
• Repairing and replacing plumbing fixtures and drainage systems
• Cutting and replacing ceiling tiles and repairing ceiling grids
• Repairing and replacing door hardware and closures
• Replacing broken glass
• Troubleshoot and determine repair needs in general maintenance, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical (HVAC)
• Detect and report needed major repairs on building structures and systems, including lockers, furniture, and equipment
• Complete repairs as directed by work orders or the supervisor
• Help keep building structures, their mechanical, electrical, and sanitary systems, and their grounds in good repair and functioning order to positively support student achievement

Facility and Equipment Maintenance

• Inspect building exterior and interior, playground equipment, and grounds; perform maintenance and minor repairs
• Move, install, assemble, and repair school furniture and playground equipment as needed
• Assist with mowing and detailing of district grounds
• Maintain an inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials

Safety

• Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensure they are in safe operating condition
• Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures
• Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including proper lifting and climbing techniques
• Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and promptly report any that are not immediately correctable to the supervisor
• Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities

Other

• Communicate effectively and courteously with campus administration and staff to determine repair needs and provide updates on the status of repairs
• Attend training classes and seminars as directed
• Follow District Policy, Administrative Guidelines, and Employee Handbook/Supplement directives
• Perform other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Evaluation: An evaluation will be completed in writing at least once each school year.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard carpentry equipment, including small hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments, electrical meters, test equipment, motor vehicles, doilies, carts, computer

Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking, bending, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving

Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (100 pounds and over) daily

Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures and excessive humidity and dampness, dust, fumes, smoke, gas, toxic chemicals and materials, solvents, grease, oil; noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts, moving objects and vehicles; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; frequent districtwide travel
