What You Can Expect

As a Utility Locator, you'll help protect and maintain critical campus utility infrastructure by identifying and marking underground utility assets before excavation activities begin. You'll support the safe and reliable operation of electrical, fiber, steam, condensate, chilled water, potable water, stormwater, and sanitary sewer systems across the University of Iowa campus.

In this role, you'll coordinate closely with ENGIE operations teams, university stakeholders, contractors, planners, and GIS/CAD specialists to support construction projects, utility maintenance, and infrastructure improvements. You'll respond to Iowa One Call locate requests, maintain accurate utility records, and contribute to mapping and asset management initiatives that enhance system reliability, safety, and long-term planning.

What You'll Do

  • Perform and coordinate utility locating services for underground utility systems operated by ENGIE across the University of Iowa campus
  • Respond to Iowa One Call locate requests and collaborate with Iowa One Call and university stakeholders to maintain accurate utility mapping records
  • Coordinate with ENGIE teams, university personnel, and contractors to support excavation, construction, and maintenance activities while helping protect utility infrastructure and maintain service reliability
  • Utilize GPS technology to collect field data and partner with CAD and GIS teams to update utility maps, asset records, and infrastructure documentation
  • Support asset management and maintenance planning efforts by maintaining accurate utility records and assisting with installed asset updates
  • Create, update, and close work orders within the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), ensuring accurate documentation of completed work


What You'll Bring

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate's degree, technical training, trade/vocational education, military training, or coursework in GIS, surveying, utilities, engineering technology, or a related field preferred
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience performing utility locates, surveying, construction support, underground utility work, infrastructure maintenance, military engineering operations, or related field activities
  • Knowledge of underground utility locating equipment, GPS/GIS mapping technology, damage prevention practices, and industry standards
  • Experience using GIS, GPS, CAD, and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) preferred
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work with GIS maps, CAD drawings, construction documents, and utility records
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, mobile technologies, and computer-based systems used to document locate activities and field work
  • Knowledge of safety practices and regulations associated with utility, construction, industrial, or military environments
  • Ability to work independently in the field while collaborating effectively with operations teams, contractors, and campus stakeholders
  • Valid driver's license required and ability to participate in an on-call rotation, including after-hours emergency locate requests


Additional Details

  • You must possess a valid U.S. driver's license/clean driving record to drive company vehicles while on campus
  • You must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies
  • This role requires daily attendance at worksite
  • Must be physically capable to hear and understand audible alarms, detect changes in noise levels of equipment and portable radio communication
  • Capable of frequently standing; walking; balancing; sitting; climbing (ladders, stairs, ramps, catwalks and the like as required); kneeling; pushing; pulling; lifting (min. 50 lbs)
  • Capable of performing repetitive motions as required
  • Required to have eyesight corrected at 20/40 to accurately read and interpret such as but not limited to instruments, gauges, and manuals
  • Must be physically capable of wearing protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to half and full-face respirators, fall protection equipment, hardhat, safety shoes, safety glasses
  • This position requires work in both indoor and outdoor environments, with approximately 80% of time spent in the field and 20% indoors. While performing job duties, employees may be exposed to varying weather conditions, construction sites, utility infrastructure, and other environmental conditions common to field operations


Compensation

Hourly Range: $27.40 - $42.00 USD hourly

This represents the average expected pay range for a qualified candidate.

ENGIE complies with all federal, state, and local minimum wage laws. Actual salary offered may vary depending on geography, experience, education, internal pay alignment, or other bona fide factors.

In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for a competitive bonus / incentive plan.
