Venous Access Nurse (24 hrs/week)

The Venous Access Nurse's responsibilities include vein assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for a complex patient population. The role requires expertise in IV clinical practice, ability to assess veins and provide recommendations for alternative access devices, critical thinking, collaborative practice in a multidisciplinary cancer center, line care maintenance and troubleshooting, knowledge of vein preservation principles, and excellent communication skills. The Nurse also provides patient and family education and psychosocial and emotional support. Location Boston and surrounding communities. Primary Duties and Responsibilities A. Delivers expert, evidence‑based nursing care to patients and families. Implements the nursing process: Assesses veins and access needs and makes recommendations to providers accordingly. Assesses patient and family needs. Evaluates home line care routine and supports patient to achieve optimal outcomes. Analyzes assessment data to develop and support clinically accurate diagnoses. Plans care by establishing goals with measurable outcomes. Implements the plan of care. Evaluates the patient's response to interventions. Documents care according to Institute and regulatory agencies' requirements. Administers medications relevant for venous access patients and/or specific to imaging protocols, performing procedures safely and efficiently in accordance with Institute policy. Provides specialized care for protocol drug patients in various settings. Evaluates educational and psychological needs of patient and family, incorporating identified needs into the plan of care. Educates patient and family about vein choice, vein preservation techniques, line care, and treatment modalities. Recognizes and responds to emergency situations appropriately. Maintains BLS and/or ACLS certification. Identifies community resources to promote continuity of care and makes appropriate referrals. Complies with accepted standards of professional nursing practice and licensure/registration requirements applicable to the nursing role. B. Establishes rapport with patients and families from a variety of cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. Interacts with patients and families in a caring and compassionate manner respecting the need for privacy and confidentiality. Develops approaches to problem‑solving that meet individual needs. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide age‑specific care and support to the populations served. Fosters an environment sensitive to the needs of diverse populations, including culture, ethnicity, gender, and age. C. Manages the environment of patient care. Monitors the environment of care with attention to patient safety and ensures compliance with regulatory agency standards. Complies with Institute, Nursing, and Patient Care Services policies, procedures, work rules, and standards of conduct. Adheres to the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses with interpretive statements in all aspects of professional practice. D. Contributes to goal formulation and achievement for the unit, division, and Institute. Assists in defining goals and developing systems and work processes for the unit and division. Participates in unit, program‑based, and divisional committees, councils, and initiatives. Demonstrates flexibility in setting and changing priorities, accepting additional responsibilities as needed. Participates in QA/QI projects for the unit and the Division of Nursing and Patient Care Services. Supports research activities within the unit, division, and Institute. E. Works collaboratively as an effective member of the health‑care team. Demonstrates the ability to work collaboratively with peers and co‑workers, addressing and managing conflicts effectively. Serves as a contributing member of the multidisciplinary health‑care team. Delegates as appropriate and supervises assistive personnel in the provision of patient care. Functions in the charge nurse role when necessary, coordinating patient flow into infusion areas. F. Seeks opportunities to foster professional growth. Identifies areas for professional growth, formulates goals, objectives, and methods for accomplishment. Attends in‑services, workshops, and seminars; shares information gained with colleagues. Facilitates professional growth of self and others by acting as preceptor and mentor for new staff. Collaborates in preparing professional reports, articles, and presentations for colleagues and the public. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Demonstrated ability to work as an effective member of an interdisciplinary team. Skills in critical thinking, problem‑solving, and independent decision making. Ability to function in a busy work setting with patients of complex needs. Minimum Job Qualifications Education: Associate degree in Nursing; Baccalaureate degree in Nursing strongly preferred. If Associate degree, must complete BSN within four years. Experience: One year (or equivalent) of nursing experience where venous access is primary responsibility. License / Certification / Registration Required Registered Nurse license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required. Certification in Venous Access Nursing preferred (VA‑BC or CRNI). Supervisory Responsibilities None. Patient Contact Yes. Requires understanding of special needs and behaviors of patient age groups served: young adults to geriatrics.
