Certified Veterinary Technician

Veterinarian Technician Position Purpose: This Veterinarian Technician provides excellent veterinary care to patients at the Vetco Total Care full‑service hospital and delivers exceptional customer service to pet owners. The Technician represents the mission and values of Petco, sets the tone for the technical and customer support team, and fosters cohesion and motivation within the hospital partners. Essential Job Functions Greet clients and patients, escort them into an exam room, obtain weight and vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, pain score, body condition score), record all data in the electronic medical record, and begin documentation of the patient visit by obtaining a thorough patient history. Assist the veterinarian with routine and emergency appointments, surgeries, dentistry, and euthanasia, working under direct supervision from a veterinarian or the Hospital Office Manager/Hospital Leader on Duty. Perform patient restraint, obtain and process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications at the veterinarian’s direction, and maintain the electronic medical record. Schedule appointments, communicate with and educate clients, relay test results to doctors and clients, maintain and update inventory as well as client/patient records, and manage accounts receivable. Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures, safely support induction and monitoring of anesthetized patients—including checking and recording vital parameters—monitor patients during recovery, and prepare them for discharge to owner or transfer to an overnight care facility. Provide in‑hospital treatments for sick patients, including giving injectable and oral medications, intravenous therapies, and caring for patients as directed by the veterinarian; keep patients clean, watered, and fed when indicated, and walk canine patients for elimination when necessary. Participate in training new staff members and disseminate knowledge as required. Keep the hospital environment neat and clean; perform cleaning based on a pre‑determined maintenance schedule. Other Duties and Responsibilities Perform additional duties as assigned. Provide backup phone and front desk support as needed. Nature of Supervision In all activities related to patient care, the Veterinary Technician operates under direct supervision from veterinarians and the Hospital Office Manager or Hospital Leader on Duty. Overall supervision is provided by the Hospital Office Manager. Planning and Problem Solving The Veterinary Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring day‑to‑day operations are efficient and provide an optimal experience for patients and clients. Supervisory Responsibility This position has no immediate supervisory duties. Education/Experience College or college‑equivalent education completed, as required to become a Credentialed Veterinary Technician in the state where the hospital is located. At least one year of prior experience as a Veterinary Technician or working in a veterinary practice. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Compassionate and sympathetic, with the ability to maintain a professional attitude and demeanor during emotional and stressful situations. Telephone and computer skills. Team player willing to learn new techniques and treatments, provide creative ideas, and accept change. Work Environment The majority of duties are conducted in the Vetco Total Care full‑service hospital. The position requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds as necessary), and standing for long periods. A large amount of time is spent in direct contact with clients and their pets.
