Manufacturing Estimator / Production Planner

Location: Miramar – San Diego, CA
Job Type: Full-Time
Salary: $78,000–$95,000 per year, depending on experience

Position Overview

We are an established metal fabrication company in the Miramar area seeking an experienced Manufacturing Estimator / Production Planner to join our team.

Our manufacturing capabilities include metal shearing, punch presses, press brakes, tube bending, and TIG/MIG welding .

The ideal candidate has hands-on knowledge of sheet metal and metal fabrication and can review customer drawings, determine how a part should be manufactured, estimate material and labor requirements, and prepare accurate and competitive quotations.

This position will initially have a strong focus on estimating , with the opportunity to take on increasing responsibility for production planning, scheduling, and shop-floor coordination/supervision .

Key Responsibilities

• Review customer drawings, specifications, RFQs, and bills of material.
• Determine appropriate manufacturing processes and routing.
• Estimate material requirements, utilization, and scrap.
• Estimate setup and run times for shearing, punching, forming, tube bending, welding, assembly, and related operations.
• Estimate outside processing such as powder coating, plating, heat treating, and other finishing operations.
• Develop accurate labor and material cost estimates.
• Prepare and maintain customer quotations.
• Work with purchasing and vendors to obtain material and outside-processing pricing.
• Maintain estimating and historical job-cost information.
• Compare estimated costs and hours with actual production results and improve estimating accuracy.
• Assist with production planning and scheduling.
• Help prioritize jobs based on customer requirements, material availability, capacity, and delivery dates.
• Coordinate with production employees to resolve manufacturing issues and keep jobs moving.
• Identify production bottlenecks and opportunities to improve efficiency.
• Potentially assume increasing responsibility for production supervision and shop-floor coordination.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in metal fabrication, sheet metal manufacturing, estimating, production planning, or a related manufacturing environment preferred.
• Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and specifications.
• Working knowledge of sheet metal and fabrication processes.
• Experience with processes such as:

  • Press brake forming
  • Tube bending
  • TIG/MIG welding
  • Assembly and secondary operations
• Ability to estimate setup time, production time, labor requirements, material usage, and outside processing.
• Understanding of manufacturing routings and production flow.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Comfortable working both in an office environment and directly with employees on the production floor.
• ERP/MRP and manufacturing estimating software experience is desirable.
• Microsoft Excel proficiency is preferred.

A college degree is not required . Relevant manufacturing experience and a strong understanding of how fabricated metal parts are actually produced are more important to us.

The successful candidate should be able to review a drawing and determine how we are going to manufacture the part, what material and operations it will require, approximately how long it should take, and what it should cost to produce .
