Laboratory & Pathology Clinical Systems Administrator

The Systems Administrator provides senior‑level technical leadership and advanced systems administration support for the clinical laboratory and pathology information systems that support patient care across UC Davis Health. This position has primary responsibility for infrastructure, device, and systems support for clinical laboratory applications, pathology systems, laboratory analyzers and diagnostic devices, anatomical pathology whole slide imaging scanners, and tissue slide stainers. Under limited direction, the incumbent is responsible for analysis, architecture, design, implementation, maintenance, and high‑level technical support of assigned clinical systems and clinical applications. The role exercises initiative and judgment in applying established principles to new problems, participates in planning and execution of large, complex projects, and provides advanced level device, server, software, and network support throughout the hospital and clinics. The Systems Administrator also participates in on‑call and after‑hours support, vendor upgrades, and product go‑lives. Key Responsibilities Clinical Systems Analysis – 25% Advanced Technical Support – 25% Device & Systems Integration Infrastructure Management – 30% Technical Project Management – 20% Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Information Technology or equivalent experience/training. Extensive experience managing and implementing complex clinical applications and endpoints. Experience troubleshooting complex system integrations using network or system diagnostic tools. Experience collaborating with clinical, operational, and IT teams on large, complex healthcare system implementations. Experience supporting secure system configurations and integrations in regulated healthcare environments. Experience supporting Windows and/or Linux server environments, distributed application architectures, and enterprise clinical system infrastructure. Ability to communicate technical and non‑technical information clearly and concisely. Self‑motivated, works independently and as part of a team, demonstrates problem‑solving skills, and meets deadlines. Basic knowledge of applying technologies and systems to meet business needs. Ability to write technical documentation clearly and concisely. Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions to improve performance. Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs. General knowledge of other IT areas and thorough understanding of system‑related issues. Advanced knowledge of system problem identification and resolution, including design, configuration, operation, repair, and tuning. Advanced experience writing and editing complex scripts for system maintenance and administration. Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies, including securing complex server‑based software. Experience leading a team of IT professionals. Preferred Qualifications Experience integrating clinical laboratory analyzers, medical devices, or diagnostic equipment with healthcare information systems using industry standards such as HL7, ASTM, TCP/IP, or FTP. Experience supporting clinical laboratory and/or pathology information systems, device connectivity, workflow integration, and real‑time data transmission. Experience supporting digital pathology technologies such as whole slide imaging scanners or image management systems. Experience in analyzing, building, implementing, and supporting healthcare information systems and regulatory requirements. Experience with large complex projects and application development teams. Experience leading cross‑functional teams and coordinating complex clinical and IT workflows. Proficiency with network analysis tools (e.g., Wireshark) to diagnose packet‑level communication issues. Experience integrating medical devices with clinical applications and optimizing workflows. Proven success supporting enterprise‑scale electronic medical record systems and translating needs into functional design. Knowledge of operations, system testing, and training for clinical laboratory and pathology systems and analyzers. Experience demonstrating knowledge of business/clinical operations to improve system design and training projects. Advanced problem‑resolution skills for highly complex issues, with quick diagnosis and effective implementation. Leadership skills as a technical resource and collaborator with key personnel and management. Ability to learn assigned applications, meet proficiency testing requirements, and maintain certifications. Skill in managing stakeholder expectations, competing priorities, and ensuring satisfaction with outcomes. Knowledge of risk management, mitigation strategies, and conflict resolution. Knowledge of database technologies. Strong understanding of Windows/Linux server and client environments, cloud technologies, and distributed application architecture. Knowledge of modern network systems, hardware platforms, and integration of third‑party software. Knowledge of IT security principles and best practices for secure, compliant configurations.
