Mental Health Counselor
Responsibilities:
The Mental Health Counselor is responsible for providing short-term counseling, crisis intervention, consultation, outreach programming, and referral services to students. Working under the supervision of the Director of Counseling Services, the counselor supports the emotional well-being, personal development, and academic success of students by providing accessible and culturally responsive mental health services. This position requires a student-centered professional who is committed to supporting a diverse campus community and fostering an inclusive environment that promotes wellness, resilience, and student success. Additional responsibilities include:
- Provide short-term individual counseling and mental health support to students.
- Conduct intake assessments and develop appropriate treatment recommendations.
- Provide crisis intervention, risk assessment, and safety planning as needed.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical documentation in accordance with professional and legal standards.
- Make referrals to community-based providers and resources when long-term or specialized care is required.
- Consult with faculty, staff, administrators, and parents (when appropriate and permissible) regarding student well-being concerns.
- Develop and facilitate educational workshops and outreach programs related to mental health, stress management, wellness, resilience, and other student development topics.
- Participate in campus-wide initiatives promoting mental health awareness and student well-being.
- Collaborate with Student Development, Residence Life, Public Safety, and other departments to support students holistically.
- Attend occasional evening or weekend programs and events as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Counseling Services.
- Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or other appropriate field of study required.
- A minimum of 2 years professional experience related to student affairs, mental health counseling, or social work. Specifically working with college-age populations and emerging adults.
- Experience in suicide prevention and intervention training, including Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and/or Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR).
- Experience working with college-age populations and emerging adults.
- Experience providing crisis intervention and threat/risk assessment.
- Experience supporting students with substance use concerns, anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and adjustment issues.
- Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
- Knowledge of FERPA, HIPAA, and ethical standards related to counseling in higher education settings.
- Familiarity with Title IX, student conduct processes, behavioral intervention teams (BIT), CARE teams, and higher education compliance practices.
- Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or equivalent state licensure.
- Certified Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) or equivalent substance use credential.
- Bilingual in both English and Spanish.
This position is fully in person and requires on-campus presence. Remote and hybrid work arrangements are not available for this role.
