Associate EHS Consultant or EHS Consultant

Overview This position provides support to environmental, health and safety (EHS) staff and business unit partners to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, and alignment with corporate environmental policies and procedures. The successful candidate will support permitting and compliance activities related to floodplain ordinances, wetlands, erosion and sediment control, stormwater, and Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act, with potential opportunities to support other subject matter areas. General knowledge is required in the areas of air, water, waste, and hazardous materials. The position maintains current knowledge of environmental laws and regulations and supports the technical aspects of regulatory requirements under guidance of experienced team members. Responsibilities Serve as subject matter expert for designated environmental programs and related compliance issues, supporting the company’s environmental goals, strategies, programs, and processes. Assist with implementing procedures and programs to help business units comply with environmental laws and regulations. Track regulatory changes, legislative activities, and industry standards. Under supervision, work with internal Subject Matter Experts and federal, state, and local regulatory authorities to interpret regulations and laws. May participate in Duke Energy internal/external industry committees and teams. Provide support for completion of regulatory-required and internal environmental reports, reviewing complex data for accuracy and compliance with monitoring standards and permit limits. Assist with environmental training programs. Participate in preparation, submittal, and negotiation of permits and permit renewals with federal, state, and local authorities. Assist with communicating permit requirements to facilities and update facility plans and documents as needed while minimizing operational impacts. Collaborate with EHS professionals and facility personnel to achieve work unit goals and enhance company reputation through planning, organizing, communicating, and scheduling environmental work activities. Support department projects to accomplish business objectives and continually develop job-related knowledge and skills to meet expectations. Basic/Required Qualifications Note: This posting is for one open position. Depending on relevant experience, the level may vary. Associate EHS Consultant: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering or related field; or High School/GED with 4 years related experience. EHS Consultant: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering or related field; or High School/GED with 7 years related experience. Desired Qualifications General understanding of Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and RCRA regulations. Experience with permitting and compliance activities related to floodplain ordinances, wetlands, erosion and sediment control, stormwater, and/or Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act. Experience working with federal, state, or regulatory agencies and at multiple facilities or jurisdictions. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines; experience working with diverse groups toward common goals. Working toward certification(s) as an environmental professional (QEP, CHMM, PMP, etc.) or professional registration (P.E.) is preferred. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a customer-oriented focus; comfortable working indoors and outdoors. Working Conditions and Travel Hybrid work arrangement after onboarding; live within reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility. Office environment with computer use; outside work in all seasons; occasional overtime, weekends, outages, and callouts.
