The Chuan Wu Laboratory in the Department of Immunology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is seeking a Lead Scientist to drive innovative research investigating the mechanisms that maintain intestinal homeostasis and host defense, with a focus on immune-neuron communication in the gut, host-microbiota interactions, and regulation of the intestinal epithelial barrier during health and inflammation. Working closely with the Principal Investigator, the Lead Scientist will develop and execute research strategies, design and lead independent studies using cutting-edge molecular, cellular, immunological, and genomic approaches, and publish impactful discoveries with direct relevance to inflammatory bowel disease and other immune-mediated disorders. This position offers exceptional opportunities for scientific discovery, multidisciplinary collaboration, and career development in a world-class research environment.Job Responsibilities:Initiates and executes research strategies in partnership with the PI or more senior scientist.Develops new research protocols, techniques and procedures. Identifies emerging scientific and technical trends and advances with possible impact on laboratory researchIdentifies experimental data pertinent to the analysis problem. Processes, organizes and summarizes data, reporting these experimental results. Monitors quality and integrity of recorded information and data. Ensures data collection and entry methods meet quality standards. Interprets data as it relates to research problem. Generates hypotheses to predict future implications based on the critical evaluation of these data.May publish as first author in journals within discipline. Participates in manuscript peer review process as a formal reviewer where required. Presents research both internally and externally to multi-disciplinary audiences.Provides lab operation support and makes recommendations regarding equipment use and maintenance, supplies, etc. Troubleshoots instrument and equipment issues. Provides input into lab operation processes and procedures. Recommends equipment acquisition and decommissioning. Anticipates laboratory operational and capital needs and promotes standards of safety.Provides instruction and guidance to junior level staff and trains as needed.Maintains regular and predictable attendance.Performs other related duties as assigned in order to meet the goals of the department and the institution.Minimum Education and/or Training:Bachelor's degree in relevant scientific area is requiredMinimum Experience:Twelve (12) years of relevant work experience is requiredTen (10) years of relevant experience is required with a Master's degreeSeven (7) years of relevant work experience is required with a PhDCompensationIn recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
