Automotive Technology Program The Automotive Technology program at South Seattle College delivers hands‑on training with advanced equipment and industry support. Guided by professionals, students gain real‑world skills and can work toward ASE certification to enhance career opportunities. Training is held in the renovated 49,000‑square‑foot Huling Automotive Technology Center, which features modern service bays, VR classrooms, and safe, industry‑standard tools. Position Summary The two teaching positions (Electrical and Drivability) require instructors to report to the Dean of the Automotive and Diesel Technology Division and provide classroom and laboratory instruction on a daily basis. Instructors teach maintenance of storage batteries, cranking motors, charging systems, EV and HEV systems, motor‑generators, ignition systems, lighting systems, dash instrumentation, HVAC systems, engine performance, drivability diagnosis, and on‑board electronic control modules and communication networks. The instructor will develop student understanding of the principles of operation of these automotive systems and support diagnostic tests and troubleshooting. This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with representation by AFT‑Seattle. The salary range for part‑time faculty is $8,845 – $13,248.33 for a 5‑credit single‑class (P2: A1‑E7). All AMT classes have a 15‑credit single‑class workload per quarter. Responsibilities Instruct students in safety, environmental awareness, human relations, and leadership, integral to the program. Teach the curriculum for Automotive Technology certificate programs. Provide assistance and advice to students regarding their success and eventual employment. Work with other faculty and students to maintain a clean and safe working environment. Complete all necessary college paperwork, e.g. registration forms, grade reports, and safety reports, in a timely fashion. Participate in curriculum development and counseling of students. Collaborate with peers, campus committees, and professional organizations to maintain program excellence and industry ties. Participate in department planning and operation. Serve on department and campus committees as appropriate. Qualifications A high school diploma or equivalent. At least seven (7) years of current experience in the automotive industry. At least three (3) of those years at the journeyman level in automotive electrical systems. Proficiency in operating and teaching with advanced diagnostic equipment such as Lab Scope, Diagnostic Scanners, Digital Multimeters, and 5‑Gas analyzers. Ability to teach and communicate effectively with students from diverse social, cultural, and economic backgrounds and an understanding of the goals of community college and vocational education. Ability to work with computer‑based systems. Capability to obtain a Seattle College Vocational Teaching certificate and complete an in‑service teacher education program. ASE Master Automotive Technician Certified, or ability to achieve the certification within 90 days of hire.
