Health and Safety Manager

Overview The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager will work under the Director of OEHS. The EHS Manager will perform complex safety and health program work, including developing safety policies and procedures; participating in safety training and education of staff; inspecting work areas for hazards; and investigating accidents. May train others. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment. The primary responsibilities include training and outreach, program development and compliance in fire safety, laboratories, offices, buildings, grounds, shops, and construction sites. The EHS Manager may review safety issues related to construction and renovation and perform industrial hygiene activities including indoor air quality (IAQ) assessments. Responsibilities Manage the campus fire safety program including building fire safety and fire extinguisher inspections, campus hot work permits, fire drills, AED inspections and maintenance. Respond to indoor air quality (IAQ) concerns throughout the campus; interview occupants, inspect areas to identify causes, take basic IAQ measurements when appropriate, and prepare written inspection reports. Manage the department\'s IAQ databases including records of complaints and investigations, mold remediation and asbestos abatement projects. Manage OEHS instruments including calibration and maintenance. Manage fume hood and eye wash/safety shower inspections. Inspect renovation and construction sites and assist in monitoring dust and noise containment. Assist with facilities maintenance worker safety programs, including Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection, Respiratory Protection, Personal Protective Equipment, Asbestos Operations and Management, Forklift safety, among others. Manage and coordinate OEHS consultants. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor\'s degree in a relevant scientific discipline and 3–5 years of environmental health and safety experience (required). Specific experience with laboratory, office and facility-based populations (required). Possession of the Associate Safety Professional (ASP) certification or obtaining the ASP certification within 1 year (required). Occasional lifting and moving of heavy drums and other materials (required). Occasional use of Level C chemical protective clothing and respiratory protection (required). Preferred Qualifications Experience in the public sector and with diverse populations (preferred). Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other administrative databases. Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and municipal codes and standards related to OEHS activities in a research institute of higher education. Knowledge and understanding of the use and limitations of electronic instrumentation and interpretation of results. Ability to interact effectively with a broad range of constituents in a diverse and multicultural environment. Ability to assess chemical hazards, contain chemical spills, and follow appropriate emergency response procedures. Ability to use respiratory protective equipment and wear Level C protective clothing. Ability to lift and move heavy drums, up to 50 pounds. Strong written and oral communication skills.
