PAYMENT SCHEDULE

  • 5,000 paid at completion of academy
  • 5,000 at successful completion of probation
  • 2,500 at end of two years of employment
Under direct supervision, participates in initial departmental training and orientation programs. The Police Officer Recruit is the police trainee classification designed specifically and solely for the purpose of employing police officer candidates in a non-sworn status during the initial basic police officer academy training. Incumbents will be afforded the opportunity to be appointed to and sworn in as a probationary entry-level police officer with full police authority upon successful and satisfactory completion of the California POST Academy training. Examples of Duties Attends and completes a basic POST certified police officer training academy designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the criminal justice system and specialized training in various laws, police practices and procedures, law enforcement techniques, first aid, and physical conditioning; Participates in initial departmental training and orientation programs and physical conditioning including field training under direct supervision for the purpose of developing awareness of functions, activities and responsibilities of a police officer; Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/ local agencies and associations, City management and staff, and the public; Promotes community policing, attends community meetings, and participates in community-based programs; and Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications

CANDIDATES MUST BE 20 1/2 AT TIME OF APPLICATION

High school diploma or equivalent Some college course work in criminology, police sciences or a related field is desirable. Experience Prior experience in law enforcement is desirable. License and Certifications Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's license. Special Requirements Must be able to pass a California POST background investigation which includes a physical exam, psychological exam, and polygraph exam. Must be able to pass a written exam and a physical fitness test administered by the Human Resources Department. The position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, running, jumping, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position requires both near and far vision, the ability to distinguish colors and acute hearing. Additionally, incumbents may work outdoors in all weather conditions, including wet, hot and cold. The position entails working in hazardous situations, and may involve abusive persons, potential physical violence and the potential risk of exposure to chemical and biological hazards in the performance of law enforcement duties. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to drive motorized vehicles, operate a variety of law enforcement equipment, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions and often work with constant interruptions. Must be able to lift 25 pounds at minimum. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations. Benefits Associated With This Position Include: Medical Insurance – City pays premium of $800 up to $2,100 /mo for employees and eligible dependents, depending upon coverage level Dental Insurance – City pays monthly premium for employees and eligible dependents; 2 plans Vision Reimbursement – up to $300 per year Life Insurance - $25,000 Accidental Death & Dismemberment - $25,000 Deferred Compensation - $1560 per year Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) The City participates in Social Security Vacation Leave – 80 hours accrued in first year Sick Leave – 96 hours annually Clothing or Uniform allowance, depending upon position City contribution to a 401(a) plan $870 or $1560 per year depending upon assignment 14 Paid Holidays per year 2 Floating Holidays per year 20 hours of Additional Floating Holidays per calendar year Credit Union Employee Assistance Program Tuition Reimbursement Program - $5000 per fiscal year Education Incentive Pay – 3% for a Master's or Doctoral Degree Mobile Device Pay - $100 per month (for select positions) Shift Differential Pay - 5% (subject to the terms of the RCSEA MOU) Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) – 2% @ 55 for employees who are considered a "classic" member of Cal PERS or a current member of another California public retirement system who is hired on or after January 1, 2013; Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) – 2% @ 62 for an employee who becomes a "new" member of Cal PERS for the first time on or after January 1, 2013 (and who was not a member of another California public retirement system prior to that date.)
