Police Officer Non-Certified

Position Overview The City of Somerton is currently hiring Non-Certified Police Officers. We offer a competitive compensation package and the opportunity to serve in a growing, community-focused city. Compensation Non-Certified Starting Salary: $24.00 / $49,920 annually After completion of the AZ Post Certified Academy salary is $30.15 / $62,712 annually Hiring Bonus Incentives $5,000 for Non-Certified $100 per month for Bilingual (Spanish) Stipend $1,000 Annual Retention Incentive Take-Home Vehicle Essential Functions Attends classroom-training sessions and takes notes required to obtain State Peace Officer Certification. Completes written, oral, and skills proficiency examinations for a wide variety of required Peace Officer skills and knowledge, maintaining required levels of proficiency. Participates in physical conditioning training, testing, and maintains required levels of physical fitness. Adheres to AZ POST academy rules and regulations. Performs other related duties as assigned. Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes City goals, priorities, vision, and values, and complies with all City policies and procedures. Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned. Minimum Qualifications Being a United States citizen. Being 21 years of age by the academy graduation date. Having a high school diploma or GED equivalency. Being in sound medical, physical, and mental health. Having at least 20/20 uncorrected vision or 20/20 corrected vision meeting specified criteria; capable of distinguishing basic color groups against a favorable background. Meeting AZ P.O.S.T. and Somerton Police Department drug standards. Having good moral character and personal integrity. Successfully passing a comprehensive background investigation, including a polygraph. Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of City policies and procedures. Safe work practices, occupational hazards and safety precautions. Skill in Maintaining academic and professional standards in accordance with Somerton Police Department policies. Following verbal and written instruction. Reading and understanding training materials and completing written, physical, and skills testing. Learning and applying training materials and training instructions. License and Certification Requirements A valid Arizona State Driver's License is required. Physical Demands and Working Environment Work is performed in a classroom environment and in the field for training exercises; it requires strenuous physical effort and the ability to meet physical standards of the AZ POST Academy. Automatic Disqualifiers Been convicted of a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Arizona. Been dishonorably discharged from the United States armed forces. Been previously denied certified status, had certified status revoked or has current certified status suspended. Illegally sold, produced, cultivated, or transported marijuana or dangerous drugs/narcotics for sale. Used marijuana for any purpose within the past two years. Illegally used marijuana or dangerous drugs/narcotics while employed or appointed as a peace officer. Illegally used a dangerous drug or narcotic, other than marijuana, for any purpose within the past seven years. Ever illegally used a dangerous drug or narcotic other than for experimentation; experimentation defined as not exceeding a total of 5 times lifetime or exceeding one time since age 21. Have a pattern of abusing prescription medication. Convicted of or adjudged to have violated traffic regulations governing the movement of vehicles with such a frequency to indicate disrespect for traffic laws within the past three years. Been previously employed with a law enforcement agency and since committed or violated federal, state, or city laws pertaining to criminal activity. Lied during any stage of the hiring process, falsified any information on the application or background questionnaire. Conviction of domestic violence crime, misdemeanor, or felony or conviction of a lesser charge that was a domestic violence crime at the time of occurrence. Benefits Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) – City employees are automatically enrolled; employees contribute 11.86% of gross wages and the City matches 11.86%. Long Term Disability (LTD) – Included through the ASRS; employees contribute 0.14% and the City matches 0.14% of gross wages. Social Security & Medicare – Employees pay contributions into the system. Worker's Comp. – Insurance coverage for medical expenses and loss of income due to an on-the-job injury. Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance – Administered by CapFi; employees may choose from two traditional PPO plans or a High-Deductible Health Plan with a Health Savings Account. Dependent premiums are paid one month in advance and are pre‑taxed. Mexico Medical and Dental Insurance (Siarmed) – City offers full‑time eligible employees health insurance and dental plan options via Siarmed. The City pays a portion of the employee’s cost if the employee enrolls, and also contributes a percentage to cover spouse and/or dependent premiums. Life Insurance – City pays 100% of the cost of a MetLife Group Term Life Insurance Plan. $50,000 Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment coverage for each benefit‑eligible employee is provided by the City. Health Savings Account – If you choose to enroll in the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP), the City contributes $1,400 annually, paid in equal monthly installments of $116.67. Employee Assistance Program – Provides free counseling sessions for employees and family members, plus a 24‑hour crisis line for emergencies. Paid Time Off (PTO) – Available for regular full‑time employees; paid leave is usable 90 days after hire. Accrual varies with years of service. Extended Illness Bank (EIB) (Sick Leave) – Employees can use the EIB immediately after 90 calendar days from hire date for illness or injury of employee or immediate family member. Holidays – The City recognizes 13 holidays per year: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President's Day, Cesar Chavez Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day After Thanksgiving, One‑Half Day Christmas Eve if Christmas falls on a weekday, Christmas Day, and other days as set by City Council. Deferred Compensation – Employees may participate in a tax‑shielded Annuity Plan (457 Plan) through payroll deduction.
