Job Title: Concrete Finisher

Job Description

This role focuses on building and preparing large structural and architectural precast concrete forms used for projects such as parking garages, grocery stores, apartment buildings, and other commercial structures. You will help construct steel and wooden molds based on blueprints, support concrete pouring operations, and perform detailed finishing work to ensure high-quality, durable precast products. The position combines hands-on construction labor, mechanical aptitude, and a strong commitment to safety and quality in a fast-paced production environment.

Responsibilities

• Build steel and wooden frames (molds) for concrete based on blueprints, using hand tools and power tools to assist carpenters and other team members.

• Handle and move materials such as mesh (up to approximately 100 pounds as a two-person lift), rebar, wires, nuts, bolts, and other components to supply the form-building stations.

• Perform general labor tasks including sweeping, cleaning and prepping wooden and steel forms for the next concrete pour, and assisting in getting the plant ready for ongoing production.

• Review and follow blueprints for each job, ensuring measurements, layouts, and specifications are accurate before and during form construction.

• Assist with concrete pouring operations by preparing forms, monitoring the process, and ensuring proper placement of concrete in the molds.

• Finish concrete surfaces by smoothing and leveling using brooms, levels, screeds, and laser screeds to achieve the required finish and quality.

• Operate equipment such as jackhammers, forklifts, and bobcats in a safe and efficient manner as needed for production and material handling.

• Follow work instructions to clean, maintain, and upkeep all assigned equipment, tools, and work areas.

• Cut and install wood block-outs and other inserts needed for casting bands, reveals, and finishes according to piece drawings.

• Set up equipment and forms used for casting architectural bands and finishes, ensuring proper alignment and secure placement.

• Place concrete on casting beds to match piece drawings, verifying correct thickness, placement, and coverage.

• Lay out casting beds with correct dimensions for each piece and for the overall length of the bed, using tape measures and other layout tools.

• Set up casting beds according to specifications, including installing all form side reveals, bottom steel, and plates as required.

• Monitor bed heat using computer systems and make adjustments or report issues to maintain proper curing conditions.

• Wash exposed aggregate panels and full beds to achieve the specified appearance and texture.

• Place dunnage correctly under finished products in the yard to protect panels and maintain safe storage conditions.

• Grind ends of panels and grind clean pallets or beds to remove imperfections and prepare surfaces for further processing.

• Scrape and clean side forms and chamfers, apply oil or release agents as needed, and ensure forms are ready for the next pour.

• Set clamps and hook-ups correctly on panels to ensure safe lifting, handling, and transport of finished products.

• Inspect finishes and call attention to any defects, inconsistencies, or quality concerns so they can be addressed promptly.

• Adhere to all safety procedures and participate actively in maintaining a safe work environment, including using required personal protective equipment.

• Demonstrate dedication to customer satisfaction, first-time quality, and production efficiency in all tasks.

• Follow and support continuous improvement practices aligned with the philosophy of making every day slightly better than the day before.

• Collaborate with team members, assist others as needed, and contribute to daily cleaning and housekeeping responsibilities throughout the plant.

• Support outdoor yard operations when assigned, including dry finishing concrete and preparing finished precast products for shipment.

Essential Skills

• Demonstrated mechanical skills with power tools and hand tools used in construction and production environments.

• Previous labor experience in physically demanding roles that require standing, lifting, and moving throughout the day.

• Ability to accurately read and use a tape measure for layout, cutting, and verification of dimensions.

• Capability to work flexible hours, including varying start and end times based on production and pour schedules.

• Ability to perform physically intensive tasks, including lifting, carrying, bending, and working on feet for extended periods.

• Comfort working in a dirty, hot, and sweaty construction-type environment with continuous movement and activity.

• Willingness and ability to follow detailed work instructions, safety procedures, and quality standards.

• Reliability in maintaining consistent attendance and readiness to work scheduled shifts.

• Ability to safely operate or learn to operate equipment such as forklifts, jackhammers, and bobcats.

• Basic ability to interpret job instructions, labels, and measurements related to blueprints and piece drawings.

• Capacity to work effectively as part of a team, support coworkers, and contribute to a collaborative work culture.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Professional construction experience in areas such as carpentry, concrete work, demolition, framing, roofing, renovation, or similar trades.

• Experience reading and interpreting blueprints and construction drawings.

• Work in concrete finishing, roofing, renovation, demolition, plumbing, insulation, or related trades.

• Experience using tape measures, power tools, and hand tools including wrenches, screw guns, saws, and cutting tools.

• Exposure to tasks such as assembly, bolting, digging, light carpentry, building pallets, caulking, painting, and general labor.

• Experience operating forklifts or other material-handling equipment in a production or construction environment.

• Familiarity with floor preparation, saw cutting, and other construction-related finishing tasks.

• Comfort working outdoors in varying weather conditions when assigned to yard labor duties.

Work Environment

Most work takes place indoors in a highly active, physically demanding construction and production environment. The plant can be dirty, hot, and sweaty, and employees are moving throughout the day as they handle large panels, materials, and equipment. Some roles, particularly yard labor positions, require working outdoors in the elements, including heat, cold, and varying weather conditions, while performing tasks such as dry finishing concrete and preparing precast products for shipment. The panels and forms being built are large and heavy, requiring frequent lifting (often as part of a two-person team), bending, and manual handling. The environment is strongly team-oriented; everyone, including supervisors and leadership, contributes to floor work and daily cleaning responsibilities. Safety is a major priority, supported by extensive safety protections and procedures throughout the plant. Typical shift structures include one primary shift and an additional early-morning crew around 2 a.m., with start times commonly between approximately 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., depending on pour schedules and production needs. Employees remain on site until pours are completed to ensure concrete is finished properly and does not dry inaccurately. Work is never scheduled on Sundays, reflecting a commitment to maintaining a day of rest each week. Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Trenton, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
